月経に対して、女性はあまりにも消極的すぎたのかもしれません。
恥ずべきこと、隠すべきこと、ずっと親も学校も社会もそうやって提示して、議場にあげることが厭われる状況が作られてきたことも影響したのかもしれません。
以下のような対応を求めるというのは、現状を踏まえた一時的対処として画期的と言えますが、この根本にある「女性が月経に対してただ受容するしかない」と捉える日本社会の無策を露見しているとも言えます。
WHOの以下の提言は、自分の月経に対する無議論に対して大きな雷を落としました。
「月経を"恥ずべきもの"ではなく肯定的で健康なものと捉え、仕事や社会活動に全力で参加できる環境にアクセスできる」という文言が非常に印象的です。
これが目指すのは「月経はつらいものだから休める環境」ということではなく、「月経の諸問題を適切に自己管理して、社会活動に全力で参加できる環境」であり、大きく異なります。
私が月経の教育を受けたのは30年近く前ですが、男女で分かれて話を聞きました。家族の中でもこのことを話してはいけないという雰囲気で、朝シーツを度々汚しても、それ以上の解決策を話し合おうという雰囲気はありませんでした。月経2日目に部活の激しいトレーニングをこなす時に不安があってもとても言い出せませんでした。そして私のこれらの体験は、決して珍しいものではなかったのではと思います。
時代は変わり、薬物的にも製品的にもこれらに対処する選択肢が色々と増えてきているのに、以下のアンケート結果を見ると、それにアクセスすることに積極的でない素地が、根強いと見ることもできます。
現状を踏まえた必要な対応に加え、あるいはそれ以上に、
・月経の捉え方のアップデートは必要ではないか
・月経教育のあり方は正しいのか
・月経に対する対処行動が正しく保健指導できているのか
そういった問題点の議論も進むことを願っています。
