Are Japanese truely non-religious?

Hello! My name is Jun. Thank you for visiting my note. Today, I'd like to talk about whether Japanese have religions or not.

I think many non-Japanese people wonder why Japanese reguraly pray to gods while we claim that we belive nothing. Therefore, I am going to explain as a Japanese what is happening in Japanese culture.

★The facts
First of all, let me explain what the facts are like.

①Some street surveys uncover that about 70% of Japanese say that they do not have any religion. This means that many Japanese believe that they are not religoius people.

②Japan has about eighty thousands shirines and seventy thousands temples.
The shirines are dirived from Shintou( Shintou is Japanese traditional religion) and as you know, the temples are places for Buddism. This means that there are thousands of religious buildings in Japan.

③approximatly 70% of Japanese visit a shirine to pray to Gods and most of them celebrate a Chrismas day. This means that most of Japanese people do some religious-related events in their everyday lives.

They are the facts. Have you find a contradiction of them?

Yes, as I noted before,  many Japanese reguraly pray to gods and visit religious-related buildings while we claim that we belive nothing.

This cause non-Japanese people to wonder if Japanese are riligious.

Do you think Japanese have riligion from these facts?
It is really challenging question, as first of all, you must difine what religion is and whether Shintou is religion or just culture.

Please think about this question! Thank you for reading.
