①not only ... but also

シチュエーション
・新しいアイデアを既に書いた内容に追加したい時に使う

例文
Rapid urbanization contributes to not only housing shortages but also increased pollution and strain on infrastructure, challenging city sustainability.
急速な都市化は、住宅不足だけでなく、公害の増加やイ ンフラへの負担の増大にもつながり、都市の持続可能性に 困難をもたらす。

Poor working conditions result in not only physical health problems for employees but also mental health issues, affecting their overall well-being and productivity.
劣悪な労働環境は、従業員の身体的健康問題だけでなく、 精神的健康問題にもつながり、従業員の全体的な幸福と生産性 に影響を与える。

Climate change is affecting not only the environment but also the global economy, causing severe financial losses and disruptions.
気候変動は環境だけでなく世界経済にも影響を及ぼし、深刻な経済的損失と混乱を引き起こしている。

②in addition / moreover / furthermore / besides

シチュエーション
・新しい文で追加情報を提供する際に使用される。
・長い文を避けるために使われることが多い。

例文
Increasing income inequality exacerbates social tensions. In addition, it limits access to essential services such as healthcare and education for the underprivileged.
所得格差の拡大は社会的緊張を悪化させる。さらに、恵まれない人々にとって、医療や教育といった必要不可欠なサービスへのアクセスが制限される。

Climate change is causing more frequent natural disasters, disrupting communities worldwide. Moreover, it threatens biodiversity and the survival of many species.
気候変動は自然災害の頻度を高め、世界中の地域社会を混乱させている。さらに、生物多様性と多くの種の生存を脅かしている。

Air pollution significantly contributes to respiratory diseases among urban populations. Furthermore, it has a detrimental effect on wildlife and natural ecosystems.
大気汚染は、都市住民の呼吸器系疾患の大きな原因となっている。さらに、野生生物や自然の生態系にも悪影響を及ぼしている。

Unemployment rates have risen sharply due to the economic downturn. Besides, the lack of job opportunities is leading to increased crime rates in many regions.
景気低迷により失業率は急上昇している。その上、雇用機会の不足が多くの地域で犯罪率の上昇につながっている。

moreoverとfurthermoreの使い分け

• Moreover,…は前の文のポイントを補足・強調するために使われることが多い。少しカジュアル、一般的な文脈で広く使われる。

• Furthermore,…は前の文に対して新しい、重要な情報を追加する際に使われる傾向がある。よりフォーマルな文章やスピーチで使われることが多い。

moreoverを使った例

The experiment was successful. Moreover, it provided new insights into the underlying processes.
実験は成功しました。さらに、それは基礎的なプロセスについて新しい洞察を提供しました。

・実験が成功し、その実験が基礎的なプロセスについて新しい洞察を提供したという補足説明をしています。

furthermoreを使った例

The experiment was successful. Furthermore, it revealed unexpected results that could lead to new research directions.
実験は成功しました。さらに、それは新しい研究の方向性につながる可能性のある予期せぬ結果を明らかにしました。

・実験が成功したという結果に加えて、新しい研究の方向性につながる可能性のある予期せぬ結果を得た、という新しい、重要な情報を追加しています。

moreoverのよくあるミス

moreoeverを使うときに起きるよくあるミスは2つの情報の間に直接の関連性が見られないことです。

下の文章を見てみましょう。

Pollution levels in the river are dangerously high. Moreover, the local cuisine is famous.
川の汚染レベルは危険なほど高い。さらに、地元の料理は有名だ。

1文目のPollution levels in the river are dangerously high.
2文目のMoreover, the local cuisine is famous.

は全く関連性のない文章です。そのため、この2文をmoreoverで繋ぐことはできません。

よって、moreoverを使う場合は2文目の内容を変える必要があります。

Pollution levels in the river are dangerously high. Moreover, this pollution is affecting the health of local residents.
川の汚染レベルは危険なほど高い。しかも、この汚染は地域住民の健康にも影響を及ぼしている。

これにより、川の汚染レベルが、健康被害を与えているという関連情報をmoreoverで繋ぐことができました。

moreoverを使う場合は、前の文章とmoreoverで始まる文章が関連性があるかを確認する必要があります。

③as well as ... also

シチュエーション
・２つの関連する情報を結びつける際に使われます。
・両方の事柄が同等に重要であることを示し、追加情報を提供する際に特に有用。

例文
Excessive use of social media can negatively impact mental health. As well as causing anxiety and depression, it also leads to issues with self-esteem and body image.
ソーシャルメディアの過度な利用は、メンタルヘルスに悪影響を及ぼす可能性がある。不安やうつを引き起こすだけでなく、自尊心やボディイメージの問題にもつながる。

Living alone often results in higher living expenses. As well as increasing the cost of housing, it also raises expenses for utilities and daily necessities.
一人暮らしは生活費がかさむことが多い。住居費が増えるだけでなく、光熱費や日用品の出費も増える。

解説: "Moreover"は追加の情報を提供し、前の文を補強する際に適しています。気候変動による自然災害と海面上昇の両方が重要な問題であるため、"Moreover"を使うのが適切です。

②Many students in rural areas lack access to quality education. Furthermore, they often have limited resources and support compared to their urban counterparts.
