ウィンブルドン大会からロシアとベラルーシ出身の選手を排除するのはアリかナシか?

It is one of the typical, yet controversial, movements that athletes are influenced during a political conflict. Athletes in certain countries are often excluded from international sports event during wars.

You probably heard of this already; for Wimbledon tennis tournament this year, All the Russian and Belarusian tennis players are not allowed to join the competition due to the Russian invasion to Ukraine. Not to everyone's surprise, it has caused much dispute.

Some say that such a decision is inevitable. We somehow feel that, if any countries are violating international laws by criminal actions such as invasion of other countries, sports players are also partially responsible for it and thus be restricted about their attendance to international competitions. It is somewhat understandable because players from other countries would not feel comfortable to play against these players. It is often said that sports should not be influenced by political powers; however, that kind of opinion seems to be coming not from violating countries but from violated countries.

On the other hand, as usual I would say, not all the athletes are comfortable about this decision. Some argue that there is not much that players from invading countries can do about it. Imagine that a Russian tennis player who strongly disagrees with Russian invasion in Ukraine. He/she would barely have much power to deal with this situation. No matter how such a players tries to take an action against it, it is not realistic to believe that they are also responsible for it.

This is the very case of Russian and Belarusian tennis players as they are banned from the Wimbledon tennis tournament this year.

With these being said, my point is - is it ethically right to exclude Russian and Belarusian tennis players from Wimbledon?

Why do we do this? Do you think is it a correct decision to make? Why or why not?

Here are some videos and articles about it. I recommend that you take a look at them before starting brainstorming.

BBC reports about the ban as below.

Some people say its ban is "completely shameful". What do you think?

See you in a lesson.
