It is mid-September already! Daily temperature is calming down, and it is now a good time to start something new, such as reading books, exercising, working on art, and so on. Now, most of students are preparing for sports festivals in Japan. Even though I personally did not love playing sports, students should be enjoying something together.
Speaking of sports, have you ever played any "e-sports" before? Anything that counts as e-sports - soccer games, baseball games, online multi-player games - are getting a lot of attentions these days. There are some professional e-sports players around the world. Even in Japan, there are a quite few professional e-sports player groups.
One of them is called "DetonatioN Gaming", and they are popular as a team that employs e-sports players as full-time workers. This means that there are some people who play games as their full-time job and make living with it. Can you believe such a life? Would you try that?
This could be surprising to you as well, but they are also sponsored by well-known companies, such as KDDI, logicool, and SHARP. Becoming a sponsor is such a big deal for these companies because it indicates that they recognize what they sponsor as something they want to support for further development. To some extent, probably, it is vey old idea to say, "Games are for children."
Now, I want you to know that there are some movements to recognize e-sports as Olympic sports. Although it did not realize for Tokyo 2020, it seems quite likely that we see e-sports on TV for Olympic games in the future. In fact, International Olympic Committee (IOC) once hosted an e-sports event in Japan, called Olympic Virtual Series (OVS).
In this event, a baseball game called "パワフルプロ野球 2020" and a racing game called "グランツーリスモ" were nominated.
Here is the note for you; in the past, "パワフルプロ野球" series had "実況" in their titles as below:
However, the recent titles do include "e-baseball" instead now.
I see this change as their hope to be recognized as e-sports. This trend cannot be ignored in this matter. They are selling this baseball game not just as a game but also as a gateway to e-sports.

Yet, not everybody is completely happy to include e-sports in Olympic games. Of course, it is questionable if we can treat typical Olympic sports, such as swimming, ice skating, and wrestling, in the exact same way we see e-sports, such as playing baseball games. But why? What are the difference? Is there any clear guideline for any sports to be in Olympics?
In this sense, the debate topic is; Should e-sports be in Olympic games?
