日本で飲食店が完全キャッシュレスに移行するのは、よい判断である。賛成か、反対か?

Have you heard of the hashtag, #Boycottstarbucks ?

Starbucks in UK announced that they will stop accepting cash but go completely cashless from this October. All the customers will have to pay with credit/debit cards or Starbucks app. Some people have got very furious about it, asking others to boycott Starbucks, while others are just fine with it.

Just for your information, being cashless is not so special for life in UK. In London, for example, buses are completely cashless; all the passengers have to pay with credit/debit cards. Personally, it was quite surprising. Everybody, including the elderly people who do not look familiar with tech things, is fine with going cashless. It seems that there is the unwritten rule, "If you don't like it, don't use it."

Now, let's imagine that a cafe in Japan is also thinking about whether it should stop accepting cash. Do you think it is a good idea to be completely cashless? What are advantages and disadvantages of being cashless for cafe owners? Which stance is more clever and valuable than the other, and why?

The debate topic is: do you think it is a good idea for a cafe in Japan to go completely cashless?

Here are some conditions for this debate:

  • We assume that a cafe in Japan is wondering to switch.

  • Currently, that cafe accepts both cashless and cash payments.

  • "Cashless" means accepting payments with credit/debit cards and payment with the cafe's app.
