爰天皇知隼別皇子密婚而恨之、然重皇后之言、亦敦友于之義而忍之勿罪。

There is a local tale about a man who once stayed overnight in the Togano. During the night, two deer lay beside him. At dawn, the male deer spoke to the female deer, "I had a dream last night. I was covered with white frost. What could this signify?" The female deer replied, "If you go out, you will surely be shot by a hunter, and salt, like the white frost, will cover your body." A man who was near there found this strange. By morning, a hunter arrived and killed the male deer. This event led to the saying, "Even a deer that does not call out can end up fulfilling its own prophecy."

In the spring of the fortieth year, in the second month, it was considered to make Metori-no-Himemiko a consort. Her half-brother, Prince Hayabusawake, was chosen as the matchmaker. However, Prince Hayabusawake secretly kept her for himself and did not report back for a long time.

Unaware that the princess was already claimed, the Emperor went to Metori-no-Himemiko's bedroom. During this visit, the female weavers sang:

里人（さとびと その土地の人）の話によりますと、昔、ある人が菟餓（とが）に宿泊したとき、二頭の鹿が近く伏せていました。夜明けに、牡鹿が牝鹿に「昨夜、白い霜が自分の体を覆っている夢を見た。これはどんな意味があるのだろうか？」と話しました。牝鹿は「あなたが出歩いたら、きっと人に射られて死ぬでしょう。塩をその体に塗られることが、ちょうど霜の白いのと同じになる徴でしょう」と答えました。その場にいた人はこの会話を不思議に思いました。その後、猟師が来て牡鹿を射殺しました。これにより当時の人の諺に『鳴く鹿でもないのに、夢占いのままになってしまった』といわれるようになった。

四十年目の春の二月、雌鳥皇女（めとりのひめみこ）を后に迎えようと思われました。異母弟の隼別皇子（はやぶさわけのみこ）が媒(なかだち 仲人）として選ばれましたが、彼は密かに皇女を自分のものにしてしまい、長い間報告しませんでした。
