In the twenty-second year of his reign, during the first month of spring, the Emperor spoke to the Empress, expressing his desire to take Princess Yata (Yata no Hime Miko) as a concubine. The Empress did not consent. The Emperor then made his request through a poem:

"I have clearly stated my intention, for I wish her to be like a spare bowstring, used only if the main one breaks; I want to welcome Princess Yata."

The Empress replied with a poem of her own:

"Layering clothes doubly is fine, but you, who wish to share our bed, are a fearsome man indeed."

The Emperor continued with another poem:

"Like the lined shores of Naniwa Bay, she must have thought she would stand beside me."

To which the Empress responded:

"Like a summer silkworm wraps itself in a double cocoon, having two women serve is not good."

The Emperor then composed yet another poem:

"Even those who walk tearfully up the slope of Hika at Asazuma are better off with a companion by their side."

天皇は二十二年の春の一月に、皇后に向かってこう言われました。「八田皇女(やたのひめみこ)を側室として迎えたい」。皇后はこれを承諾されませんでした。そこで天皇は歌を詠んで皇后に頼まれました。

「私がはっきりと言いたいのは、彼女を予備の弦として使いたいのです。本物の弦が切れた時だけ使うのですから、八田皇女を迎えたいのです」

皇后は答える歌を詠まれました。

「衣は二重に着るのもいいですが、あなたが夜床を並べようとされるのは恐ろしいことですね」

天皇は再び歌を詠まれました。

「難波崎(なにわざき)の浜辺のように、彼女も私たち二人が並んでいると思っているでしょうに」

これに対して皇后は答歌を詠まれました。

「夏の蚕(かいこ)が繭(まゆ)を二重に作るように、二人の女性を仕えさせるのは良くありませんよ」

それでも天皇はまた歌を詠まれました。

「朝妻(あさづま)の避介(ひか)の坂を半泣きで歩く者も、道連れが二人いればよりよいのです」

しかし、皇后はどうしても許せないと感じられたので、黙ってしまい、何もお答えになりませんでした。
