I seriously don't understand why there's such a huge gap between my self-perception and others' perceptions.

  Since high school, whenever I said, "I don't have social skills," people would often respond, "No way, really?" I can't tell if I actually have social skills or if I just don't have a true friend who tells me the truth. But if my self-perception is correct, it means I don't have close friends because I can't gauge the distance in friendships due to my lack of social skills. That seems more likely. I'm screwed.
