プログラムが書けなくても、有名なOSSプロジェクトに参加する方法あります
オープンソースへの貢献は、ソースコードを書くことだけではない。Season of Docsはプロジェクトのドキュメント作成を支援するプロジェクトで、2020年の支援対象がGoogleのブログで公開された。
The program received over 500 technical writer applications, and with them, over 800 technical writing project proposals. The enthusiasm from the technical writing and open source communities has been amazing!
500以上のアプリケーションが応募されたとのこと。最終的なリストを見ると、50のアプリケーションに対しメンターとライターがアサインされている。
- At least 18 years old at time of registration.
- Able to demonstrate prior technical writing experience by submitting role descriptions and work samples.
- Eligible to work in their country of residence during duration of program.
- A resident of a country not currently embargoed by the United States.
参加資格は18歳以上で、role descriptionとwork sampleを示せること。居住地はUSにembargo（禁輸）とされた国でなければ問題ない。

Arduinoというプロジェクトに目が止まったので、見てみよう。
I have analyzed the top 40 most downloaded Arduino’s and 3rd party libraries. I have found that there are libraries both Arduino-made and contributed that do not expose all of their potential towards users. So, I have written and updated their documentation.
レポートによると、Arduinoおよび3rd partyで最もダウンロードされている40のライブラリを確認し、potentialがexposeされてないものに対してアップデートしたとある。レポートにはgithubへのリンクもある。
NeoPixelというのはフルカラーLEDを簡単なプログラミングで光らせることができることでハードウェアで、そのソフトウェアのドキュメントにSeason of Docs経由で参加した人物がcommitしている。
元のドキュメントが「自分で調べろよ」と雑に書いてあるのに対し、IDEのメニューから、どうやって確認するかを書いている。
最後にクレジットやライセンス条項などを書いている。
こうしてめでたくladyada本人にマージされた。
オープンソースというと、高度なプログラミングの技術と、地道なコミュニティへの貢献が必要と思われがちだが、コアメンバーがドキュメントにまで手が回らない場合に、こういうルートがあるということだ。
