少し前に、個人的な用事で、さくらインターネットのVPSでLinuxサーバを立ち上げたのだが、選択できるOSの一覧に2024年にサポートが終わるCentOSと、幾つかのCentOSの後継ディストリビューションが並んでいた。
その中の一つであるRocky Linuxについていろいろと読んでみた。
Red Hatが、それまでRed HatのdownstreamだったCentOSをディスコンし、upstreamであるCentOS Streamに注力するという発表をしたのが2020年12月8日。
その後にCentOSのFounderであるGregory KurtzerがCentOSのもともとのゴールを目指すプロジェクトをRocky Linuxと名付けて、そのGithubリポジトリがtop-trendingになったのは12月12日。
「CentOSを使ってるのは日本人ぐらい」なんて知ったかぶりをしたツイートを幾つか目にしたが、これだけ世界中のCentOSユーザーが注目していたということだろう。
ではGregory Kurtzerとは、どんな人物なのだろう。本人がgithub pagesに載せているページを見ると、CentOSプロジェクトを2002年に立ち上げて2005年までの間はリーダーでありマネージャーだったが、less then excellent people(優秀ではない人々?)や法や政治によってリーダーシップをrelinquish(手放す)ことを余儀なくされたとある。
2009年のCentOSコミュニティのトラブルについてはZDNetに古い記事が残っていた。
Not-For-Profit status、つまり非営利組織としての手続きをアメリカでもイギリスでもしていなかったようだ。結果として個人がドメインを管理したまま連絡が取れなくなるなどの危機が起きていた。
とはいえ、これはGregory KurtzerがCentOSから離れて数年後の話。その間に彼は何をしていたのかというと、Singularityというコンテナ関連のOSSを立ち上げていたり、WarewultというLinuxクラスタを管理するOSSを立ち上げたりと活躍している。
Rocky Linuxの発表後は、Rocky Linuxの権利関係をサポートするFoundationとRocky Linuxのサポートビジネスを展開するCtrl IQという会社を立ち上げている。このあたりの組織設計は、過去の経験が生きているのだろう。
書きながらUbuntuを立ち上げたマーク・シャトルワースのことを思い出した。彼もセキュリティビジネスを成功させた経験を元にUbuntuを立ち上げている。またAppleを離れ、再びAppleに戻ったスティーブ・ジョブズのようでもある。
さくらインターネットの前佛さんが「(Rocky Linuxを選択するかどうかは)文脈と思想による」と書いているが、まあ、ミッションクリティカルな用途はともかく、個人で触るようなLinux環境あたりから、過去の同僚の名前をOSに付けるような人物が作ったOSに委ねてみるのもよいのではないかと。
