ニューヨークに出て、「サークル・ゲーム」(1967)や「Both Sides Now（青春の光と影）」(1968)、「ウッドストック」(1970)などでシンガーソングライターとしての地位を確立した。メッセージ色の強い歌詞と透明感あるヴォーカルで根強い人気を持つ。
「サークル・ゲーム」は、日本でもよく知られている、1960年代の学生闘争を描いた映画「いちご白書」Strawberry Statement(1970)の主題歌として、バフィー・セントメリーが歌っています。
