billionは10億とは限らない

大きい数が苦手です。お金でいうと自分の年入と比べられる範囲まではなんとなく感覚的に扱えるのですが、それを越えると冷静に計算をしないとよくわかりません。MillionとかBillionってどのくらいか分かりますか? 

最近気づいたのですが、実はBillionには二種類あります。下記はWikipediaからの引用です。

1,000,000,000, i.e. one thousand million, or 109 (ten to the ninth power), as defined on the short scale. This is now the meaning in both British and American English.
1,000,000,000,000, i.e. one million million, or 1012 (ten to the twelfth power), as defined on the long scale. This is one thousand times larger than the short scale billion, and equivalent to the short scale trillion. This is the historic definition of a billion in British English.

ショートスケール（ 1 million）だと 1 thousand x 1 million  = 10億、ロングスケール（long scale）だと 1 thousand x 1 thousand =  1 million x 1 million = 1 (short scale) trillion = 1兆です。1ドル108円だとショートスケールなら1080億円、ロングスケールなら1 trillion dollars = 108兆円です。1000倍も違うので間違えたら気づきそうですが、そもそも数が大きすぎてピンときません。

最近ではイギリスでもshort scaleが普通なようですが、国や時期によって違うので厄介です。フランス由来らしいですが詳しくはwikipediaで。
