Some thoughts on the circular economy

It was quite refreshing to attend “Wirtschaftstag Japan“, a Japanese-German business symposium held on 25 May 2022 as a live event after two years. The audience was united by the sheer joy of getting together again in person.

The symposium was hosted under the title of “New Materials for a Sustainable Future: Development, Processing and Recycling” and fully packed with highly informative presentations by German and Japanese academia and industries.

Personal takeaway:
I learned the importance of viewing environmental footprints from a life-cycle perspective from cradle to grave.

It was clear that all the industry speakers think beyond the horizon of their corporate production, and always have their upstream and downstream industries in mind for achieving holistic benefits of the circular economy.

I must confess that the entire process appears to be quite complicated at times. Without any opportunity to attend such an event, a layperson like me would not easily get the big picture of the great corporate efforts made on this front. There is a clear sign that more or better communication is greatly needed. And the “Wirtschaftstag Japan” definitely serves as a great forum for B2B communications.

New materials will eventually find their ways to consumers in the form of final products. Good B2C communications will then become essential to raise consumer awareness of improved environmental footprints on the time span of product life cycles.

And this message must be brought home somehow - and at best in local languages. I hope to find my place somewhere in the supply chain of circular economy.
