Website Accessibility .. Narrowly Saved

I was supposed to do a small favour for a client. After receiving our German translations for their website, the client asked me to “take a quick look at some additional texts”.
They were navigation texts for enhancing the accessibility for internet users with disabilities. E.g. texts like “skip to main content” are embedded as a part of an inclusive design.

As I was going through these #navigation #texts in #German , one word stood out:
Speisekarte ❗ ❓

It means a restaurant menu in German, yet the website had nothing to do with gastronomy.

Yep, as you may have guessed by now, it was supposed to be the German translation for “menu”!

A small favour turned out to be a big favour.
It was the right decision for the client to come back to a human translator at the last moment. A sentence like GO BACK TO “Speisekarte” would have harmed their corporate image despite having an otherwise well-translated website.
