It has become a problem because it breeds in large numbers in lakes in various countries, including Japan.
I do not know the current situation, but it used to be a big problem in Lake Victoria in East Africa.
There is a company in Gifu Prefecture that recycles used paper called SUNWASPA.
This company is now trying to use the water hyacinth in Cambodia as part of the raw materials for making gin, an alcoholic beverage.
The water hyacinth is converted into bioethanol through several stages.
Bioethanol is a common fuel made from sugarcane or corn sugar.
It is more expensive to make bioethanol from Pontederia crassipes than from sugarcane or other crops.
Therefore, it is difficult to make a profit when sold as fuel.
SUNWASPA has created a gin called "MAWSIM" that uses bioethanol made from sugarcane as its main raw material.
They are trying to make a gin by mixing it with bioethanol made from Pontederia crassipes.

日本を含めたいろいろな国の湖で大量に繁殖して問題になっています。
今の状況は知りませんが、東アフリカにあるヴィクトリア湖でも以前大きな問題となっていました。
サンウエスパという古紙リサイクルをしている会社が岐阜県にあります。
その会社が今、カンボジアでホテイアオイをお酒のジンをつくる原料の一部に使おうとしています。
ホテイアオイをいくつかの段階を経てバイオエタノールに変えます。
バイオエタノールはサトウキビやトウモロコシの糖から作る燃料が一般的です。
ホテイアオイからバイオエタノールを作るのはサトウキビなどからバイオエタノールを作るよりもコストが掛かります。
そのため、燃料として販売するとなかなか利益が出ません。
サンウエスパ社はサトウキビから作ったバイオエタノールを主原料にする「MAWSIM（マウシム）」というジンを作りました。
それにホテイアオイから作ったバイオエタノールを混ぜてジンを作ろうとしています。
最大で10％くらい混ぜられるだろうとサンウエスパ社は考えています。
燃料として売る場合の100倍くらいで売れるそうです。
このようにホテイアオイが付加価値がついた商品にすることができるといいですね。
