Do you know what Bark Cloth is?
It was introduced in NHK's "The World is Overflowing with Things I Want" 「「世界はほしいモノにあふれてる」last March(2009).
The reason I remembered Bark Cloth was because I read this article in Nikkei MJ.
“紙布Paper cloth", a traditional craft brand
This article was the first time I learned about "paper cloth".
Paper cloth, 紙布 as the Chinese character suggests, is a cloth （布）made of paper（紙） (washi).
It is a textile woven from washi paper made into thread and cotton or silk.
It is a traditional craft that has existed in Japan for over 300 years.
However, most Japanese people including me do not know about this "paper cloth”（紙布）.
When a bag maker learned about paper cloth, they thought it would be a sad to lose the traditional craft and culture of paper cloth.
So they decided to make a bag using paper cloth.
Of course, it was not an easy task.
The strength required for a bag is different from that of a cloth.
After a few years, they are finally able to commercialize the product, and when they presented it at the 2020 "Maison et Objet" trade fair in Paris, it began to attract attention as an environmentally friendly product using natural materials.

バーククロス（Bark Cloth）を知っていますか？
昨年（21年）3月にNHKの「「世界はほしいモノにあふれてる」で紹介されていました。
バーククロスを思い出したのは、日経MJでこんな記事を読んだためです。「紙布」 時代の空気感まとう 伝統工芸品でクラフトブランド
私はこの記事で初めて紙布（しふ）というものを知りました。
紙布は漢字の通りで、紙（和紙）でできた布です。
和紙を糸にしたものと綿や絹で織った織物です。
300年以上前から日本にある伝統工芸品だそうです。
でも、ほとんどの日本人は紙布のことを知りません。
ぐうぜん紙布を知ったカバンメーカーの方は紙布という伝統工芸品、文化がなくなるのは残念だと思いました。
それで、紙布を使ったカバンを作ろうと思い立ちました。
もちろん、簡単なことではありません。
布とカバンとでは必要になる強さなどが違います。
数年後にやっと製品化でき、2020年パリの見本市「メゾン・エ・オブジェ」で発表した頃から自然素材を使った環境にもよいものとして注目されるようになりました。
・その国の人（日本人）でさえほとんどの人が知らないもの（紙布）があります。
・それをカバンにするというこれまでとは違った視点で見直してみます。
・世の中の価値観が変わってきて環境によいという点が価値を生み出す時代になってきています。
このように考えた時、中東やアフリカにも同じような物があるのではないかと思いました。
その時、ウガンダのバーククロス（Barkcloth）を思い出したのです。
