アフリカという国はない。There is no country whose name is Africa.

I wrote the following in an article about corporate interviews
”The following are the expected effects (purpose of the interview)
・I would like to make the companies more familiar with the Middle East and Africa.
・To give foreign students hints for finding jobs in Japan and for doing business after they return to their home countries.

We often see the expressions "Africans" and "in Africa" in the news TV program and newspaper articles.
But we don't often use the expressions "Europeans" or "Asians" or "in Europe" or "in Asia".(Unless it is appropriate and makes sense to refer to them collectively as such.)
I don't think this is only the case for Japanese.
(That doesn't mean it's OK.)

The main reason why Japanese people refer to "Africa" collectively is that they don't know much about each of the more than 50 countries in the region.
It's not that they don't know them well, they hardly know them at all. Many people don't even know the names of the countries.

Thirty-one years ago, I spent about a year in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
Since that time, I have been thinking, "I would like Japanese people to refer to Africa by the name of their respective countries instead of calling it Africa.

So far, I have been promoting this to my friends.
From now on, I would like to hold events that will help people who are not interested in the Middle East and Africa to participate and become familiar with the Middle East and Africa.

Learn even a little bit about the country → Become interested & remember the name of the country → Become aware of information about the country that they were not aware of before → Learn more → Become more interested
This is what I hope will happen.

企業インタビューの記事でこんなことを書きました。
「企業へのインタビューで想定している効果（インタビューをする目的）は
つぎのようなものです。
・企業の方にすこしは中東やアフリカに親しみを持ってもらうようになる。
　日本人は中東やアフリカの国をよく知らない人が多いです。」

ニュースや新聞記事などで「アフリカ人」「アフリカでは」という表現をよく見ます。
でも、「ヨーロッパ人」とか「アジア人」、「ヨーロッパでは」「アジアでは」という表現はあまり使いません。　（そのようにまとめて呼ぶことが適切で、意味がある場合を除きます。）
これは日本だけのことでもないと思います。
（だから、OKということではありません。）

日本人が「アフリカ」とまとめて呼ぶのは、50以上もある国のそれぞれの国をよく知らないというのが大きな理由です。
よく知らないどころか、ほとんどど知らない。国の名前さえ知らない人も多い。

今から31年前、コートジボワールのアビジャンに約1年いたことがあります。
その時から私は「日本人がアフリカと呼ばすにそれぞれの国の名前で呼ぶようにしたい」と思ってきました。

これまでは私の友だちに広報活動をしてきました。
これからは私の友だち以外の中東やアフリカに興味を持っていない人たちにも参加してもらい、中東やアフリカに親しみを持ってもらえるようなイベントを行っていこうと考えています。

少しでも知る→興味を持つ・国名を覚える→これまで気づかなかったその国についての情報に気づくようになる→さらに知る→興味が深まる
こうなることを期待しています。
