Press Conference by the Press Secretary of MOFA on European Parliamentary resolution on child abduction in Japan

European Parliamentary resolution on child abduction in Japan

[Reporter Goto, Yomiuri Shimbun] The European Parliament adopted a resolution regarding child abduction in Japan children in the early morning. How do you take this resolution as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

[Mr. Otaka, Foreign Minister] I understand that on the 8th, the European Parliament plenary session adopted a resolution on child abduction in Japan.
I would like to say one thing regarding this issue, the Japanese government has dealt with cases in Japan that are not covered by the Hague Convention, based on the domestic legal system, and responds fairly and equitably, regardless of nationality.  Regarding the cases that are subject to the Hague Convention, Japan has consistently and appropriately dealt with cases based on the Convention through cooperation with the central authorities of EU member states. Skeptical about our efforts or compliance, and not complying with the International Covenants do not apply at all. Despite the fact that the Japanese government has been continuously explaining the Japanese legal system and its efforts to the EU and related countries, we would like to continue to respond appropriately.

[NHK reporter Watanabe] It is related. But the fact that such a response is given based on their logic.  I interviewed before on what kind of idea Japan has when I was in charge of the Ministry of Justice. However, I think that they are basically skeptical about Japanese laws and systems, the situation of human rights, and such things. But it is not always the case. I don't think so, but how do you see it? As a background.

[Mr. Otaka, Foreign Minister] Regarding Japan's human rights situation, we have made a good explanation for Japan through various occasions, and we believe that it has gained a certain degree of understanding in the EU. However, I would like to refrain from speculating about this resolution and making any remarks on it, at this time. However, in any case, I would like to continue to properly respond to such efforts in Japan so that each country, including Europe, can understand them.
