Get a Glimpse of a Musical
When I visited Tokyo, I went to see a musical in Ikebukuro. The stage production, called "Billy Elliot," is set in the coal mines of 1980s Britain. Along the backdrop of the real-life miners' strike, a fictional human drama unfolds. I had never seen a musical of this scale before, so I was very excited, and indeed, the content was captivating. It had comedy, and the sense of unity with the audience was beyond my expectations.
Since the play is set in the UK, I felt that the language used retained the authentic British, or English-speaking expressions. There were child actors in the musical, and I was surprised to see that their use of swear words and expressions was carried over directly into the Japanese performance. In an era where "whiteness" is becoming more widespread, I found it refreshing and enjoyable—almost as if it were a reminder of how real conversations in that context would have sounded back then.
As I kept reading Mr. Nishino from King Kong's posts on note, my curiosity for musicals grew stronger, and I finally had the chance to it this time. Next, I want to see a production by the Shiki Theatre Company.
Bye!
