The World Glimpsed from Nodame

I opened Netflix and found "Nodame Cantabile", so I felt nostalgic and ended up watching it. As I watched, I found the relationship between enjoying classical music, European culture, and selling the story quite interesting, so I'd like to write about that.

What is classical music anyway?

What is commonly referred to today as "classical music" encompasses music from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods, spanning roughly from around 1550 to 1900. However, music from earlier periods as well as later compositions that are part of the same tradition are often included under the umbrella of classical music. Additionally, pieces composed for practical purposes during the Classical period, such as background music for social gatherings, or the Viennese waltzes of the Romantic era, which were not strictly intended for concert performance, are also referred to as classical music today.

"Nodame Cantabile" is an anime centered around classical music. The characters explore the emotions behind the compositions, researching the political, economic, and personal circumstances of the composers, and interpreting them in their way and reflecting them in their performances and conducting. Just as performers interpret pieces in their own way, it's likely that audiences attend concerts with an understanding of the background of the music. This led me to the realization that in Europe, there's a culture of understanding the story behind the music and listening to performances with that knowledge in mind.
there is a similar discussion in the business world as well. As one solution to "how to differentiate in an era filled with products?", storytelling comes to the forefront. Additionally, I've heard that artisans are highly valued in the EU. They focus not only on the environment in which products are made but also on the people involved, and they value them accordingly. When selling to people in cultures where such values are established, I think the history of Yoshino forestry could be a powerful weapon.

Bye!
