「私が京大を７回受けたワケ」

　私は５０代の頃に、高校生に混じって京都大学を７回受けた。まず、願書を提出するために母校の四日市高校を４０年ぶりに訪れた。成績証明書を入手するためだ。すると、係の人が「３０年以上前のものは残っていません」とのこと。そこで、京都大学に電話して受験できるか問い合わせたら卒業証明書だけで受験できるとのこと。

　無事手続きが済んで、センター試験を受けるために三重大学を訪れた。すると、玄関で女性警備員がやってきて「今日はセンター試験なので関係者以外は入れません」と制止された。私が受験票を見せたら驚きながら入れてくれた。

　さて、私はなぜ５０代になって京大を７回も受けたのか。それは、京大の英語が「和訳」と「英作文」だけで自己採点が難しいからだ。私は予備校講師をしているので、受験生にどのような英作文が高い評価を受けるのか教える義務があった。

　この経験は、私が社会において役に立った経験であった。

　When I was in my fifties, I applied to Kyoto University seven times among high school students. First, I visited my alma mater, Yokkaichi High School, for the first time in 40 years to submit my application. The first thing I did was to get my transcript. Then, the person in charge told me, "We don't have any left over from more than 30 years ago. So I called Kyoto University and asked if I could take the exam, and was told that I could take the exam with only my graduation certificate.

　After completing the procedures without incident, I visited Mie University to take the Center Test. A female security guard came to me at the entrance and stopped me, saying, "Today is the center exam, so only related persons are allowed in. When I showed her my examination voucher, she let me in with surprise.

　Now, why did I take the Kyoto University entrance examination seven times in my 50s? The reason is that the English at Kyoto University is difficult to self-assess because of the "Japanese translation" and "English composition" only. Since I am a teacher at a preparatory school, I was obliged to teach students what kind of English compositions would be graded highly by the examiners.

　This experience was useful for me in the society.
