The Plunge, the Dive, the Deep

The skies darken, and twilight descends.
There are no stars tonight, no moon, no wind, no saving grace.
For what is lost was never there.
Fighting daylight was a lost cause from the start.
As evening sinks, I, too, shall go beneath.
I can hear it calling out from beyond, drawing me in,
and shrugging off what remains,
I, took a breath and plunged.

Waters of such coldness took me in,
and sleep greets me like an old friend.
Yet the breath within tugs,
tossing and turning,
air pressing against me,
pushing and pulling,
its clutch never letting me free,
its presence like nets of a thousand sylphs,
all of them chorusing within me,
their voices twisting the very tides and waves against me,
their pressure moving my limbs
as though I were a strange puppet in suspension,
reaching for a salvation whose invisible hand I was never meant to grasp.

Let me in, I hear, those depths calling out to me,
come here,
whispers presumably some deep siren,
its whistling song wrapping its arms around me,
with sleeves and blankets of the abyss,
the cool,
the blue,
the quieter.
Thus although still a figure without control,
I closed my eyes,
suffered icy waves that rushed into my very insides,
as I let loose,
held my hands together,
and dived toward the endless deep.
