Darwin paved the way for animal sociology

After describing the concept of evolution in On the Origin of the Species, he described numerous continuities between humans and other animals in The Descent of Man. Notably, he pointed out that not only relationships between individual organisms and environments, but also “the society” in which individuals interact should be treated as the stage for natural selection, for example through reproductive competition.

チャールズ・ダーウィンは『種の起源』で進化論を周到に論述した後、『人間の由来と性淘汰』で遂にヒトと他の動物との幾つもの連続性を説いた。なかでも重要なのは、個体と環境とのかかわりだけではなく、個体どうしの社会も、繁殖競争などを通じて進化の舞台となることを予言したことである。
