アインシュタインの名言を調べていたら、ブッダを通じてガンジー：ミームの元ネタ
インターネット上にはたくさんのミームがある。
ミームとは、受け継がれて伝播していく情報のことで、遺伝子(gene)のひとまとまりとしてゲノム（genom）ように、情報伝達のおけるひとまとまりをさす、らしい。
先日も高2の息子が、朝寝坊して起きてくるなり、まだ慌てるような時間じゃない、などと言っていた。スラムダンク直撃世代としては、いつの間に履修したのかと、いささか興奮したが、彼は元ネタを知らなかった。仙道さんを知らずに言うのか・・・。
情報だけが単位として伝達されていく。
特にインターネット上で流布するものを、ネット・ミームなどと呼ぶ。
つい今日も、このようなポストを見た。

いかにも名言ぽいので少し調べると、”弱い人は復讐する。強い人は許す。賢い人は無視する”は、アインシュタインの言葉として広まっているらしい。

自分でも知らべたが、やっぱりEinsteinの言葉であるという原典は見つからない。
Buddhaのことばとして紹介している英語圏のサイトなどがあったりする。
The Buddha shared many wise words that inspired millions of people over thousands of years. “Weak people revenge. Strong people forgive. Intelligent people ignore” is one of his best.
出展はやはり不明。
少し派生してforgivenessについてWikiを見てみた。
ここではガンジーの言葉として、
"The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong."
が紹介されていた。
さらに検索するとwikiquoteというサイトで詳細な情報が見つかった。

"Interview to the Press" in Karachi about the execution of Bhagat Singh (23 March 1931); published in Young India (2 April 1931), reprinted in Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi Online Vol. 51. Gandhi begins by making a statement on his failure "to bring about the commutation of the death sentence of Bhagat Singh and his friends." He is asked two questions. First: "Do you not think it impolitic to forgive a government which has been guilty of a thousand murders?" Gandhi replies: "I do not know a single instance where forgiveness has been found so wanting as to be impolitic." In a follow-up question, Gandhi is asked: "But no country has ever shown such forgiveness as India is showing to Britain?" Gandhi replies: "That does not affect my reply. What is true of individuals is true of nations. One cannot forgive too much. The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong."
Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi Online Vol. 51.は、Internet Archiveという本やテキスト、webpageをアーカイブしてるサイト。便利な時代。
Collected Works of Mahatoma Gandhi（CWMG）は1から98まであるガンジーの言葉を集めた本で、vol51は1972年の発行らしい。Internet Archiveでは単語検索できるみたいなので、念のため、forgivenessで検索すると、2件ヒットするも、"The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong."は出てこない。
こっちのサイトでは
Non-Violence in Peace and War (1942) vol. 1, p. 142
を出典として挙げているんだけど、アーカイブ見ても該当箇所は見つからない。
結局、CWMGのvol.45で発見した。

ちなみに、Non- Violence In Peace And War,vol. 2 p.227には、
Forgiveness was the quality of the brave, not of the cowardly.
という似たような名言があった。
許すということにちょっと関心があって調べてみたけれどなかなか骨が折れた。現実逃避で調べてしまった。
でも、古い文献をネット上で簡単に探せるのは素敵だ。
