Reading THE FIRM for the third time
I will write a reading diary today.
"THE FIRM" is an early work of American novelist John Grisham. I read the paperback last night. This is the third time since the beginning of this year. Only a year ago, I didn't have the ability to read through to the end, so I was happy and read it over and over again.
I first encountered this novel 20 years ago when I was working in a detective agency. At that time, I was studying law on my own while working as an investigator, and it was Grisham's Legal Suspense that I came across as a distraction. It's still before I started the ultramarathon. I remember reading greedily in between the boring stakes.
After washing my feet from the detective industry where I worked for only three years, the first full marathon that I challenged with a broken heart was over, and when I was 22 years old, I had lost sight of the way to live, and I traveled abroad for the first time. I cycled 1000km one way from Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon. At the end of that trip, I bought this "THE FIRM" paperback as a souvenir for myself.
I didn't visit the city of Memphis, the setting of the novel, on my bike trip at the age of 22, but through reading, I feel like I've traveled to Memphis, Panama City Beach, and the Grand Cayman Islands in the 1990s. I was able to do it.
During my 16 years as an ultra runner, I've visited about 30 countries, but I wasn't very interested in the history and culture of those countries because I had a narrow view when I was active. Now that I have retired from the competition, I want to deepen my interests and culture while continuing to read extensively in English every day.
