水鳥が暮らすための水深

水鳥というと池や湖を連想しがちですが、鳥によっては、ずっと浅くないと生活できない場合があります。
この論文の主題ではありませんが、Introductionで書かれていたこと。

セントラルバレーでは、潜水性の水鳥には、様々なカモ類、カワウおよびカイツブリ が水深25cm以上の場所を利用し、水面採食ガモは水深5～25cmの場所を利用する（Taft et al.2002）。サギやシラサギなどの渉禽類は、水深15cm未満に生息している（Taft et al.2002）。多くのシギ・チドリ類にとって、採餌は水深10cm未満に限定される（Safran et al. 1997、Elphick and Oring 1998、Strum et al. 2013）。シギ（Calidris sp.）などの短い嘴と短い脚を持つ小型シギ類の生息条件は最も狭く、飽和した湿地の土壌や水深わずか5cmまでの地域を利用している（Collazo et al. 2002、Taft et al. 2002、 Ma et al. 2010）。 浅水域は、小型のシギ・チドリ類にとってアクセスしやすいだけでなく、後退して獲物が集中するため、採餌効率が高くなる（Neckles et al. 1990年、Ma et al. 2010年）。
