赤水蛇石神社/金運・豊穣の神/ Akamizu Snake Stone Shrine / Kin of Fortune and God of Fertility

「あかみず阿蘇西ふれあい市場」から上に上がると、見えて来る赤門。

通り過ぎると蛇が巻きついている石造があります。
白蛇がいるという赤水蛇石神社。

本殿の奥に白蛇様ご神体と書かれた社があります。
そこに白蛇様がおりました。
クーラー完備の快適な所に住んでるなあと第一印象。
最初はどこにいるか分からなかったけれどよくみると２匹ひっそりと住んでいました。よくみると、目が可愛い。

この日は暑くて、白蛇様は奥に隠れていました。

それぞれ社の近くには縄のかかった岩があり、昔から実際に白蛇が棲息していたといいます。

蛇石神社の由来と霊験

阿蘇は外輪山に囲まれていた大きな湖水であった。
大噴火により湖水の水は流れて有明海へ流れ出た。
湖面の水位が下がるにつれて中島の五岳の裾野も大きく広がり、各所には今も蛇の尾、船の尾、舟形、船繋石、蛇石、雷石、鯨石、などの地名が名残りをとどめている。

神話によれば「赤水村という村があり隼風とともに黒雨天を覆い雷鳴とともに一条の竜巻天に冲するも、やがて巨岩の切れたるところ一尺あまりの白蛇居て不思議な霊験を現すので、村人たちは蛇石さんと崇め小祠を建て祭りをするようになりたと。」記載されている。

赤水村の古老の語り継ぎによれば約五百年前の応仁の乱時代より語り継がれ、それ以前より更に一千年以前から云い伝えられたとなっているので、今日からすれば一千五百年前よりこの地に自然動物崇拝があったと見られる。

蛇石と云う巨岩は上下二つに分かれて重なり、その裂け目に蛇が棲息し現在も姿を見せることがある。
何時のころより蛇が居たかは定かではないが代々村人に崇められていたので古くから居たのは疑う余地はない。
