単語の太字だけ読んでけば脳が残りを勝手に補完してくれる、Bionic Readingとは？

0  はじめに

単語の最初の数文字だけを太くすることで文章を素早く認識・理解できるようにした仕組が、"Bionic Reading"です。

Bionic Readingをツイートしたところで多くの方々から反響がありましたので詳細をこちらのnoteでシェアします。

1  Bionic Readingの原理

Bionic Reading社のウェブサイトにはこう書いてあります。

Did you know that your brain reads faster than your eye?
We humans store learned words and so just a few letters are enough to recognize whole words.

つまり、脳は目よりも速く読めて、人は学習した言葉を覚えているので、ほんの数文字だけでも単語全体を認識できるとのことです。

よって、効果を得るためにはある程度英語に慣れていることが前提条件になると思います。

2  設定のカスタマイズ

Bionic Readingは、FixationとSaccade、そしてOpacityのレベルを変更することで自分に適した設定をカスタマイズできます。

後術するAPIを利用すれば、こうしたカスタマイズも簡単にできると思っています。

このnoteを書いている時点（2022年5月20日）でBionic Readingが利用できるサービスは３つあるようです。

残念ながらKindleでの採用はまだのようです。

4  Bionic ReadingのAPI

Bionic ReadingのAPIは、RapidAPI経由でアクセスができます。

一日500回までのリクエストは無料で利用できますのでご興味のある方は参考にしてください。

5  読みやすいのはどっち？

ツイートに関する反応からしますとほぼ半々ぐらい（2022年5月21日の時点で、参加者14000人のうち、51%が右）の印象です。

慣れるまでの時間や英語の語彙力によって個人差もきっと大きい。今後も改善を続けていくようですので最新ニュースを定期的にチェックするものいいと思います。

6  まとめ

英語の熟練度によって効果には個人差があると思いますがBionic Reading自体は非常に興味深い試みだと思います。iPhoneを利用されている方ですと ReederというアプリからBionic Readingがすぐ体験できます。

他のオプションですとAPIを利用する方法が考えられます。RapidAPIのサイトからBionic Readingのテキストを生成したときの様子です。

But it sounds like a “dog ate the homework” excuse for cancelling the $44bn acquisition, in the words of Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities, an investment firm. There are other reasons why Mr Musk may have got cold feet. The value of tech stocks has tumbled since the Twitter deal was announced on April 25th. Mr Musk agreed to pay $54.20 per share (an apparent reference to cannabis, which is associated with the number 420). This week Twitter’s shares have been trading as low as $37.
