25年前のスターバックス

アメリカのコーヒーはうすかった。日本の番茶のような存在で、１日何杯も飲むからだと思っていた。25年前、ユナイテッド航空の飛行機の中で飲んだスターバックスがボクの最初の一杯だった。「We Proudly Serve Starbucks」とカップに書いてあったのが印象的だった。アメリカ人は薄いコーヒーが好きだと思っていたからビックリした。その後日本に店舗ができたのだけれど、もともと日本には美味しいコーヒーが数多く存在し、スターバックスが日本ではどうだろうと思っていた。小さな穴から熱いコーヒーを飲む？そのままカップを持ち歩く？店員さんの自然なスマイルやゆっくりできる店内など単にコーヒーを飲むということだけでないスタイルがボクらの生活の一部に定着していった。しかも毎朝寄ってしまうまでの習慣になる。プロダクトだけでなく、そんなスタイルを作るってすごいなぁ。（絵と文：サカキテツ朗）
American coffee was light. I thought it was because it was like Japanese tea for American people and they drank many cups a day. It was the first Starbucks on a United Airline plane for 25 years ago. It was impressive that the cup said "We Proudly Serve Starbucks". I was surprised because I thought Americans liked light coffee. After that, a store was opened in Japan, but originally there were many delicious coffees in Japan, and I was wondering how Starbucks would be popular in Japan. Drink hot coffee through a small hole? Do I carry the cup as it is? The staff’s natural smile and the relaxing interior of the store, which was more than just drinking coffee, have become a part of our lives.
