“Waltz for Debby / Bill Evans” Yoshiyuki Yatsuhashi Plays Fender Esquire

I was pondering what song would be appropriate for tonight’s harvest moon. This is my rendition of “Waltz for Debby” by Bill Evans, which is not commonly covered by guitarists, but a world-famous classic. I remember that I played it several years ago in a concert as Asako Toki sang it with Japanese lyrics. I have added a front pickup to my 1963 Esquire. The swaying triplet waltz transitions to a lilting four-beat. The chord progression is a parade of dominants, while the bass notes are linked with half steps. This is the embodiment of what it means for a minimal structure to create overall beauty.

今夜は中秋の名月なので、何かふさわしい曲はないかと思い、ビル・エバンス「ワルツ・フォー・デビー」を弾いてみた。あまりギタリストがカバーするのを聴かないが、世界の名曲だ。僕の63年製のエスクワイアにはフロントピックアップが増設されている。昔、土岐麻子が日本語で歌を乗せたときにライブで一緒に演奏した思い出がある。揺れる三連符のワルツから、軽快な4ビートへ切り替わる。コードは四度進行のオンパレードだが、ベースが半音で繋がっていく。ミニマルな構造が美しい全体を形作るとはこのことだ。
