Modern Family (TV Series)

When I watched "Modern Family" in the first time, I felt that Japan is way behind. Because I think it would be hard for many Japanese people to understand some of jokes in the program. For example, Mitchel and Cameron, a gay couple, often argue about who is the dad. Which is I think an advanced issue after same-sex marriage is widely accepted in the country. Needless to say that the idea of "accepting" is already arrogant. Actually I couldn't imagine there is that kind of argument. Until I watched that show, I couldn't think in their perspective.

In addition, considering Gloria, sometimes she gets angry about remarks someone making fun of Colombia. It's very funny but the reason why it is a joke is, in my opinion, that it is socially unacceptable. In other words, in America, it is shared by many people that it is completely wrong to make fun of someone's mother country. Off course, we Japanese think it is bad idea of insulting someone's origin. However I think we are more insensitive to such things than other countries with large number of immigrants.

That kind of insensitivity often appears when we talk about relationships. For instance, people often ask men if they have girlfriends and women if they have boyfriends as a matter of course. Which is very rude to assume someone's sexual preferences and ask these questions. In American or British drama, it might be so outdated that it even becomes a joke.

This is why I love this drama, which gives me a lot of insight.
