Once upon a time when pigs spoke rhyme
And monkeys chewed tobacco,
And hens took snuff to make them tough,
And ducks went quack, quack, quack, O!

むかしむかし、
ブタたちが、
　韻いんを踏んで話し、
サルたちが、
　噛みタバコを噛み、
めんどりたちが、
　がまん強くなるために嗅ぎタバコを嗅ぎ、
アヒルが、
　ガーガーとうるさく鳴いていた、
そんなころのこと。

THERE was an old sow with three little pigs, and as she had not enough to keep them, she sent them out to seek their fortune.

年老いたメスのブタが三匹の子ブタと暮らしていましたが、子ブタたちを養う余裕がなくて、三匹に家を出て独立してもらいました。

The first that went off met a man with a bundle of straw, and said to him:
"Please, man, give me that straw to build me a house."

最初に家を出た子ブタは、藁わらの束を運ぶ男に出会いました。子ブタは男にこう言いました。
「お願いです。家を建てたいので、その藁わらをください」

Which the man did, and the little pig built a house with it.

男は頼みをきいてあげ、子ブタはその藁わらで自分の家を建てました。

Presently came along a wolf, and knocked at the door, and said:
"Little pig, little pig, let me come in."

まもなくそこへやって来たのは、一匹のオオカミでした。オオカミはドアを叩いて
「ブタちゃん、ブタちゃん、なかに入れて」
と言いました。

To which the pig answered:
"No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin."

ブタはそれに答えて
「だめ、だめ、絶対に、ぜーったいに、だめ」
と言いました。

​The wolf then answered to that:
"Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in."

オオカミはそれを聞いて
「それなら、フーフー吹いて、フッと吹き、おまえの家を吹いて壊してやる」
と言いました。

So he huffed, and he puffed, and he blew his house in, and ate up the little pig.

言葉通りにオオカミは、フーフー吹いて、フッと吹き、家を吹いて壊しました。オオカミは子ブタを残さずに食べました。

The second little pig met a man with a bundle of furze and said:
"Please, man, give me that furze to build a house."

二番目の子ブタは、ハリエニシダの束を運ぶ男に出会いました。子ブタは男にこう言いました。
「お願いです。家を建てたいので、そのハリエニシダをください」

Which the man did, and the pig built his house.

男は頼みをきいてあげ、ブタは自分の家を建てました。

Then along came the wolf, and said:
"Little pig, little pig, let me come in."

それからそこへ、さきほどのオオカミがやって来ました。
「ブタちゃん、ブタちゃん、なかに入れて」
と言いました。

"No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin."

「だめ、だめ、絶対に、ぜーったいに、だめ」

"Then I'll puff, and I'll huff, and I'll blow your house in."

「それなら、フーフー吹いて、フッと吹き、おまえの家を吹いて壊してやる」

So he huffed, and he puffed, and he puffed, and he huffed, and at last he blew the house down, and he ate up the little pig.

そしてオオカミは、フーフー吹いて、フッと吹き、さらに、フッと吹いて、フーフー吹くと、しまいには家を吹いて壊しました。オオカミは子ブタを残さずに食べました。

The third little pig met a man with a load of bricks, and said:
"Please, man, give me those bricks to build a house with."

三番目の子ブタは、積みあげたレンガを運んでいる男に出会いました。子ブタは男にこう言いました。
「お願いです。家を建てるのに使いたいので、そのレンガをください」

So the man gave him the bricks, and he built his house with them.

男はレンガをブタにあげ、ブタはもらったレンガで自分の家を建てました。

So the wolf came, as he did to the other little pigs, and said:
"Little pig, little pig, let me come in."

やはり先ほどのオオカミがやってきて、ほかの子ブタにしたのと同じように
「ブタちゃん、ブタちゃん、なかに入れて」
と言いました。

"No, no, by the hair on my chiny chin chin."

「だめ、だめ、絶対に、ぜーったいに、だめ」

"Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in."

Well, he huffed, and he puffed, and he huffed and he puffed, and he puffed and huffed; but he could not get the house down.

そうして、オオカミは、フーフー吹いて、フッと吹き、また、フーフー吹いて、フッと吹き、それから、フッと吹いて、フーフー吹きました。しかし、家は壊れません。

When he found that he ​could not, with all his huffing and puffing, blow the house down, he said:
"Little pig, I know where there is a nice field of turnips."

いくらフーフー吹いても、いくらフッと吹いても、吹いて家を壊せないとわかると、オオカミはこう言いました。
「ブタちゃん、おれは、いいカブ畑を知っているんだ」

"Where?" said the little pig.

「どこにあるの？」
と、子ブタは言いました。

"Oh, in Mr. Smith's Home-field, and if you will be ready to-morrow morning I will call for you, and we will go together, and get some for dinner."

「ああ、スミスさんのところさ。明日の朝に行けそうなら、誘いに来るよ。一緒に行って、夕飯で食べるのに取ろう」

"Very well," said the little pig, "I will be ready. What time do you mean to go?"

「そいつは、いいね。支度しておくよ。出発は何時？」
と子ブタは言いました。

"Oh, at six o'clock."

「じゃあ、６時に」

Well, the little pig got up at five, and got the turnips before the wolf came (which he did about six), who said:
"Little pig, are you ready?"

ですが子ブタは５時に起きあがり、カブを取り、オオカミが来る６時よりも前に家に戻りました。オオカミが来て
「ブタちゃん、支度できた？」
と言いました。

The little pig said: "Ready! I have been and come back again, and got a nice potful for dinner."

「ばっちり！ずっと前に行ってきて、戻ってきたんだ。夕飯にするのに良いのがいっぱい取れたよ」

The wolf felt very angry at this, but thought that he would be up to the little pig somehow or other, so he said:
"Little pig, I know where there is a nice apple-tree."

それを聞いてオオカミはとても腹が立ちました。ですが、どうにかして子ブタを見返してやりたいと考え、こう言いました。
「ブタちゃん、おれは、おいしいリンゴのなる木が生えている場所を知っているんだ」

"Where?" said the pig.

「どこにあるの？」
と、子ブタは言いました。

"Down at Merry-garden," replied the wolf, "and if you will not deceive me I will come for you at five o'clock to-morrow and get some apples."

「メリー庭園を下ったところ」とオオカミは答えて、「おれをだましたりしないなら、明日の５時に誘いに来るよ。一緒に行って、リンゴを取ろう」と言いました。

Well, the little pig bustled up the next morning at four o'clock, and went off for the apples, hoping to get back before the wolf came; but he had further to go, and had to climb the tree, so that just as he was coming down from it, he saw the wolf coming ​which, as you may suppose, frightened him very much. When the wolf came up he said:
"Little pig, what! are you here before me? Are they nice apples?"

そして次の朝の４時、子ブタはせかせかと動きだし、オオカミが来る前に戻りたいと思いながら、リンゴがある場所へと向かいました。ですが、その場所は遠いし、木にも登らないといけなかったので、ちょうど木から降りようとしたとき、オオカミが来るのが見えました。そうです、ブタはとてもおびえました。オオカミは、たどり着くと、
「ブタちゃん、なんだ、おれより先に来たんだ。そいつは、いいリンゴかな？」
と言いました。

"Yes, very," said the little pig. "I will throw you down one."

「うん、とてもいいよ。１つ投げて渡すね」
と子ブタは言いました。

And he threw it so far, that, while the wolf was gone to pick it up, the little pig jumped down and ran home.

子ブタはうんと遠くへ投げ、オオカミが取りに行っている間に、木から飛び降り、家に向かって走りました。

The next day the wolf came again, and said to the little pig:
"Little pig, there is a fair at Shanklin this afternoon, will you go?"

次の日もまた、オオカミが来ました。
「ブタちゃん、今日の午後、シャンクリンでお祭りがあるけど、行かない？」
と子ブタに言いました。

"Oh yes," said the pig, "I will go; what time shall you be ready?"

「うん、行くよ。何時に出かける？」
とブタは言いました。

"At three," said the wolf.

「３時」
とオオカミは言いました。

So the little pig went off before the time as usual, and got to the fair, and bought a butter-churn, which he was going home with, when he saw the wolf coming.

子ブタは、いつものように、オオカミが言った時刻よりも早く出掛けました。お祭りに着くと、バター撹乳器かくにゅうきを買いました。家に帰る途中、オオカミが来るのが見えました。

Then he could not tell what to do. So he got into the churn to hide, and by so doing turned it round, and it rolled down the hill with the pig in it, which frightened the wolf so much, that he ran home without going to the fair.

子ブタは、どうしたらよいかわからず、攪乳器かくにゅうきの中に隠れました。そうしたことで、攪乳器かくにゅうきはぐるりと回り、転がりだし、ブタを中に入れたまま丘を転がり降りていきました。それを見たオオカミはとても驚いて、お祭りにも行かず、走って帰ってしまいました。

He went to the little pig's house, and told him how frightened he had been by a great round thing which came down the hill past him.

オオカミは子ブタの家に行くと、ぐるぐる転がる物が丘を下って通り過ぎていったことにどれほど驚いたかをブタに話しました。

Then the little pig said:
"Hah, I frightened you, then. I had been to the fair and bought a butter-churn, and when I saw you, I got into it, and rolled down the hill."

すると、子ブタは言いました。
「はは！それなら、ぼくに驚かされたんだよ。先にお祭りに着いて、バター攪乳器かくにゅうきを買い、きみが見えたときにその中に入って、丘を転がり降りたんだ」

Then the wolf was very angry indeed, and declared he would eat up the little pig, and that he ​would get down the chimney after him.

それを聞いてオオカミは本当にとても怒って、子ブタを食らいつくすと宣言し、子ブタをとらえに煙突から降りてやると言いました。

When the little pig saw what he was about, he hung on the pot full of water, and made up a blazing fire, and, just as the wolf was coming down, took off the cover, and in fell the wolf; so the little pig put on the cover again in an instant, boiled him up, and ate him for supper, and lived happy ever afterwards.

オオカミが何をしようとしているのかわかった子ブタは、水をいっぱいに満たした鍋を掛け、勢いよく火を起こしました。ちょうどオオカミが降りてきたときに鍋のふたをはずすと、オオカミは鍋の中に落ちていきました。子ブタは、すばやく鍋にふたをして、オオカミを煮込み、そして、夕食にオオカミを食べてしまったのです。子ブタは、それからずっと幸せに暮らしました。
