「先住民の子どもたちに捧げる」タイカ・ワイティティのアカデミー賞受賞スピーチ

2月10日のアカデミー賞でも脚色賞を受賞した、ニュージーランドの先住民・マオリの血を引くタイカ・ワイティティ。

先日紹介したBAFTA(英国アカデミー賞)の受賞スピーチでは、イギリスによる母国ニュージーランドへの植民地支配に触れた彼が、今回は先住民の子どもたちへメッセージを送った。

"I dedicate this to all the indigenous kids in the world who want to do art and dance and write stories. We are the original storytellers and we can make it here as well."
この賞を、アートをしたり、ダンスをしたり、物語を書きたいと願う世界のすべての先住民の子どもたちに捧げます。私たちこそが本来の物語の語り手であり、ここ（アカデミー賞）でも活躍することができるのです。

さらに、賞のプレゼンターとしても舞台に上がったワイティティは、ハリウッドが存在する場所は先住民の土地であると、アカデミー賞を主催する映画芸術科学アカデミー（the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science）に代わって表明した。

“The academy would like to acknowledge that tonight we have gathered on the ancestral lands of the Tongva, the Tataviam and the Chumash. We acknowledge them as the first peoples of this land on which the motion picture community lives and works.”
今夜私達が集っている場所は、トンヴァ、タタヴィアム、チュマシュの先祖伝来の土地であるという事実を、アカデミーは認めます。映画コミュニティが存在し活動するこの土地の先住民は、彼らであることを確認します。

記事によれば、ハリウッドのあるロサンゼルスは、アメリカの他のどの都市よりも多くの先住民が暮らしている。
また、アカデミー賞授賞式がこのような表明をするのは、92回目にして初めて、とのこと。
