【ご報告】JIDA理事長に就任しました。

I have been appointed as the Chairman of JIDA. (English below)

1952年に柳宗理・剣持勇・渡辺力ら25人のデザイナーによって創立された、日本で最も歴史あるデザイン団体JIDA(公益財団法人日本インダストリアルデザイン協会)。

このたび、ご縁あってJIDAの理事長を拝命したので、ご報告させてください。

そもそも数日前まで、この立場になるとは想像だにしていませんでした。
なぜなら僕は、GKデザイン機構代表の田中一雄理事長の任期満了にともなって、トヨタの元デザインのトップを勤めた御園秀一新理事長の体制の準備を進めていた、新任予定の理事の一人だったからです。

御園さんは常々「JIDAを若返らせたいんだ。」と僕に話してくれていました。
そして急転直下の2日前、御園さんが「若返らせたいのに私が居座るのはやはり違う。僕はもう74歳だ。太刀川くん、やってくれないか。(意訳)」と僕に伝えてくれました。
戸惑いながらも(たしかに、40歳の最年少理事が理事長になれば、物理的に若返る…具体的…)と、ご推薦の真意を受け止めました。そして御園さんが副理事長としてサポートいただけることを条件に、この大役を引き受けることにしました。

こうして急転直下、私が約70年の歴史の中で16人目のJIDAの理事長を務めることになりました。おそらく長いJIDAの歴史の中でも、僕が最も若い理事長ではと思います。この決定の背景には、15.5人目の幻の御園理事長の最初で最後の大きな決断があったわけです。
御園さんはじめ新理事の皆さん、信じて託して下さってありがとうございます。

そして今日、8年間の大役を見事にこなし、不動の理事長として内外に大きな信頼関係を作ってくれた田中一雄さんからの理事長のバトンを僕が引き受けました。

JIDA理事長。とは言え僕の中身は、右も左もわからない新任理事です。JIDA、本当にどうなっちゃうんでしょう。でも、よくわからないペーペーの僕がこの立場を担うことは、必ずしも悪くないと思っています。

間違うかもしれないし、慣習を飛び越えることもあるかもしれません。僕もいつのまにかJIDA歴は15年目に入りました。しかし役職や運営はお任せきりでしたので、キャリアの長い会員の皆さんに助けられることばかりだと思います。そういった交流が増えれば、逆に立場の声に縛られず、今のJIDAの会員の皆さんが活躍しやすい状況を考えられるかもしれない。JIDAに関わってほしいインダストリアルデザインに携わる方々との関係も捉え直せるかもしれません。
生物の進化のように考えることが癖になってしまっている僕にとっては、こうした変化の連続と仕組みの捉え直しこそ、組織を進化させるのだと信じています。

JIDAはこの春に「日本インダストリアルデザイナー協会」から「日本インダストリアルデザイン協会」に改称しました。もはやデザイナーだけがデザインをする時代ではありません。だからこその名称変更です。

入会資格も「プロフェッショナルのデザイナー」から「産業デザインに関わるプロフェッショナル」へと変更され、デザインのための道具やソフトを作る人、エンジニア、研究者、キュレーターなど多分野へと大幅に変わりました。

そして、かつての東京オリンピックのポスターを手がけた亀倉雄策さんによるJIDAのロゴマークをJAGDA会長を務める佐藤卓さんがリデザインしてくださり、現在モーショングラフィックを中村勇吾さんが作ってくださっています。インダストリアルデザインはもはや共創の対象であって、1つの領域のデザインだけで完結するものではありません。その姿勢がここにも現れています。

インダストリアルデザインは長きにわたって産業のためのデザインの事でしたが、肝心の産業の方が劇的なスピードで変化してしまう現代です。これからのインダストリアルデザインは、惑星や生態系の限界、デジタル化の劇的な変化を超えて、産業そのものをデザインし直すことを孕むでしょう。

今日私が先輩から受け取ったバトンのように、私たちが次の世代にバトンを渡せるためにも、デザインによる産業への美しい変化を生み出すコミュニティづくりに邁進します。

I am very happy to announce that I have been appointed as the Chairman of JIDA.

JIDA (Japan Industrial Design Association), the oldest design organization in Japan, was founded in 1952 by 25 designers including Sori Yanagi, Isamu Kenmochi and Riki Watanabe.

Until a few days ago, I had never imagined that I would be in this position.
This is because I was one of the new board members who were preparing for the new chairman, Mr,Hideichi Misono, who was formerly the head of design at Toyota, when the term of Kazuo Tanaka, the former chairman of JIDA who is the president of GK Design Group.

Mr. Misono had always told me that he wanted to rejuvenate JIDA.
Two days before the sudden change of today, Mr. Misono said, "It's not right for me to stay when I want to rejuvenate JIDA. I'm 74 years old. TACHIKAWA-kun, will you do it for me?
I thought to myself, "Surely, if the youngest board member at 40 years old becomes the chairman, JIDA will be physically younger..." and accepted this big role on the condition that Mr. Misono would support me as the Vice chairman.

Thus, in a sudden turn of events, I became the 16th JIDA Chairman in the 70-year history of the organization.
I am probably the youngest Chairman in the long history of JIDA. The background to this decision was the first and last major decision of the 15.5th Chairman, Mr. Misono.
Thank you, Mr. Misono and all the new board members, for entrusting me for the next step.

Today, I have accepted the baton of the chairman from Kazuo Tanaka, who has played a major role for eight years and has built a great relationship of trust both inside and outside the organization as an unshakable chairman.

This is how I became the Chairman of JIDA. I really wonder what will happen to JIDA. But I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing for me to take on this position as a newcomer who doesn't know much.

I may make mistakes, I may jump over conventions. Yet I have been a member of JIDA for 15 years, I have been kept myself away from positions and management, so I think I will have been helped by members with long careers. If we have more interaction, we can think of a situation where the current JIDA members can play an active role without being bound by the voice of their position, and we may be able to rethink the relationship with the people involved in industrial design that we want JIDA to be involved with.
Since I have a habit to think creativity like biological evolution, and I believe that this kind of continuous change and rethinking of the system is what will evolve the organization.

JIDA changed its name from "Japan Industrial Designers Association" to "Japan Industrial Design Association" this spring. We no longer live in an age where only designers do design. That is thenreason behind of changing the name.

The qualifications for membership have also been changed from "professional designers" to "professionals involved in industrial design," and have been expanded to include people who create tools and software for design, engineers, researchers, curators, and many other fields.

Mr. Taku Satoh, who is the chairman of JAGDA, redesigned the JIDA logo by Yusaku Kamekura, who worked on the former Tokyo Olympics poster, and Yugo Nakamura is currently working on the motion graphics.
Industrial design is no longer a subject of expertise but co-creation, and it is not something that can be completed in just one area of design. This attitude is also evident here.

Industrial design has long been about design for industry, but today, industry is changing exponentially. The future of industrial design will involve redesigning industry itself, beyond the limits of the planet and its ecosystem, and beyond the dramatic changes of digitalization.

Just like the baton I received from my seniors today, I am committed to creating a community that will create beautiful changes in industry through design so that we can pass the baton to the next generation.
