Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. No.3 The sightseeing Boat "Garube"

One of the highlights of visiting Kurobe Dam is the sightseeing boat "Garube," which will have its last run on November 10th this year, so I went for a ride.

"Garube" is the highest-altitude sightseeing boat in Japan.

The name "Garube" comes from the Ainu language, which is said to be the origin of the name "Kurobe," and the boat was named with the hope for safe navigation on Kurobe Lake. The Ainu are an indigenous people of Japan, primarily from Hokkaido, with their own distinct language and culture. Many place names in Japan, especially in northern areas, have origins in the Ainu language.

Over the past 55 years, two different boats have operated under this name, but due to a decrease in passengers and the aging of the boat, its operation will come to an end this year.

This boat crosses the border between Nagano and Toyama prefectures. It's interesting to compare the difference in vegetation and terrain on the right and left sides—between Toyama and Nagano. You can also see the "Kuroyon" mountain lodge from the boat.

A Quiet Gift from Kuroyon ~ Kurobe Driftwood Bookmark.  "Trees that have grown for hundreds of years in the harsh environment of the Northern Alps are carried to the Kurobe Dam as driftwood. These valuable natural woods are given new life by the craftsmanship of skilled woodworkers, transforming them into unique bookmarks."

Seeing signs like this makes you realize how much Garube has been loved.

It feels a little sad, but I hope as many people as possible can enjoy its final run before November 10th, 2024.
