（６）渡部昇一と丸谷才一

　『永遠の知的生活　余生を豊かに生きるヒント』（一条真也・渡部昇一共著 有楽出版社 2014年・没後追悼新装版『青春の読書』渡部昇一著、ワック2018年4.11も内容は同じ）第一章「鶴岡市立朝陽第一小学校時代」の「１ー没収された本のゆくえ」で、渡部昇一は「遅進児」という言葉をあげて次のように書いています。

　　「自分の幼少期を振り返って、特に遅進児であったとは思っていなかったのであるが、初老の齢を過ぎる頃に、尊敬する学者や文筆家の読書体験を読んで、自分は本当は遅進児だったのだとつくづく思うようになっている。」（『青春の読書』）

　渡部昇一が尊敬する学者や文筆家とは、山形県立鶴岡中学校（現・鶴岡南高等学校）の先輩である作家丸谷才一であり、著者と多くの対談本を上梓した谷沢永一などです。丸谷才一の場合は、中学の頃にイギリスの社会人類学・民俗学・古典学の大学者フレーザーの俗信と社会制度に関する著作である『サイキス・タスク』を岩波文庫で読んでいる。また、谷沢永一の場合は、小学三年生のときに古本屋で島崎藤村の四詩集『若菜集』　『一葉舟』『夏草』『落梅集』の初版揃いを買ったというのですから、驚くべき早熟ぶりであると言えるでしょう。渡部昇一は「遅進児」であったかというと、それは違うと思います。
　渡部昇一著・監修『ビジネスマンが読んでおくべき１１０冊の本』 (三笠書房知的生きかた文庫,1996) の中で、渡部昇一は自らの『正・続知的生活の方法』とともに、丸谷才一の『文章読本』(中央公論社)を必読書の一つに挙げています。

(6) Shoichi Watanabe and Saiichi Maruya

　　　"Eternal Intellectual Life: Tips for Living the Rest of Your Life Richly" (co-authored by Shinya Ichijo and Shoichi Watabe, published by Yuraku Publishing Co., Ltd., 2014, new posthumous edition "Reading for Youth" written by Shoichi Watanabe, same content as WACK April 11, 2018) 1st In the chapter ``Tsuruoka City Choyo Daiichi Elementary School'', in ``1 - The fate of confiscated books,'' Shoichi Watanabe mentions the term ``a retarded child'' and writes the following.

 　``Looking back on my childhood, I didn't think I was particularly retarded.　　　However, when I passed the age of old age, I read about the reading experiences of scholars and writers I respected, and I realized that I wanted to read books. I've come to realize that I'm a retarded child. ” (“Reading for Youth”)

 　　　The scholars and writers that Shoichi Watanabe respects include the writer Saiichi Maruya, a senior at Yamagata Prefectural Tsuruoka Junior High School (currently Tsuruoka Minami High School), and Eiichi Yazawa, with whom he published many dialogue books. In the case of Saiichi Maruya, when he was in junior high school, he read ``Psychic Tusk'', a work on popular beliefs and social systems, by Fraser, a British scholar of social anthropology, folklore, and classical studies, in Iwanami Bunko. In the case of Eiichi Yazawa, it is surprising that when he was in the third grade of elementary school, he bought all the first editions of Toson Shimazaki's four poetry collections, ``Wakanashu,'' ``Hitohabune,'' ``Natsukusa,'' and ``Rakubaishu.'' It can be said that it is early maturing. I don't think that Shoichi Watanabe was a ``retarded child.''

          In ``110 Books Businessmen Should Read'' (Mikasa Shobo Intellectual Lifestyle Bunko, 1996), written and supervised by Shoichi Watanabe, Shoichi Watanabe includes his own ``Correct and Continued Intellectual Life Method'', lists Saiichi Maruya's ``Bunsho Dokuhon'' (Chuokoronsha) as one of his must-reads.  (To be continued)
