２『義民が駆ける』あらすじ　１

   江戸時代後期、財政難に苦しむ川越藩藩主松平斉典は、徳川家斉の二十四番目の男子斉省を養子に迎えていることから、その生母おいとの方に働きかけ、幕府首脳に多額の賄賂をばら撒いた上で、川越よりもはるかに経済状況の良い荘内への国替えを画策しました。庄内藩はよく耕された肥沃な田地を持ち、良質の米を産して富裕な藩と見なされていました。
 「・・目の前に荘内の野面がひろがっていた。穫入れが終り、畦に残っていた杭もひとところに集めて積まれ、田圃はがらんとしている。今日は一日穏やかな日和で、日が落ちた後には、遠い場所にある村々のまわりに、夕餉の煙とも霧とも見える白いものが漂った。そして空の中ほどに、微かに夕映えの痕を残す鳥海山の山肌が見えた。何十年も見慣れた風景だった。日が経つにつれて、こういう穏やかな日は間遠になり、鳥海山も月山も執拗な雲に覆われ、やがて野と山を罩（こ）めて雪が降る。重く厚い雪の嵩と、海を越えて吹きつける季節風に堪えて、人々は春を待つのである。」（pp.87-88)。

2 　“Gimin ga kakeru ( Public-spirited or Self-sacrificing Individuals Run)”, Synopsis 1

        In the latter half of the Edo period, the lord of the Kawagoe domain, Narinori Matsudaira, who was suffering from financial difficulties, had adopted the 24th son of Tokugawa Ienari. After scattering bribes, he planned to change the country to Shonai, which had a much better economic situation than Kawagoe. The Shonai domain was considered a wealthy clan with well-cultivated fertile fields and high-quality rice.

        "...the field of the manor spread out in front of us.  The harvest was over, and the piles left over from the ridges were piled up in one place, and the paddy fields were empty. Today was a calm day. In Japan, after the sun had set, a white thing that looked like evening smoke or fog drifted around the distant villages, and in the middle of the sky, the faint traces of the evening glow on the mountainside of Mt. Chokai. It had been a familiar sight for decades. As the days passed, these calm days faded away, and persistent clouds covered Mt. Chokai and Mt. Gassan, it snowed for the first time. People wait for spring, enduring the heavy and thick snow and the monsoon wind that blows over the sea.”(pp.87-88).　（To be continued）
