GTPsでexplain,elaborate,enlightenの違いを理解してみた

先日GTPsというカスタマイズできるChatGPTを使って、英単語検索を作成してみました。

英単語を学習している中で、explain,elaborate,enlightenの違いが気になったので、この単語検索機能を使って検索してみました。

この違いがとても分かりやすかったので紹介したいと思います。

まず始めに、ロングマン英英辞典での意味を見ていきます。

explain
to tell someone about something in a way that is clear or easy to understand

elaborate
to give more details or new information about something

enlighten
to explain something to someone

分かるような分からないような。

explainは簡単に理解できるように教えてあげるという感じ。
elaborateを詳細について語るという感じ。と受け取りました。
enlightenは少し雑ですね。「誰かに何かを説明する」分かりにくいですね。

次にGTPsで調べてみます。

Explain

Definition: To make something clear or easy to understand by describing or giving information about it.

  1. Standard: The guide will explain the significance of each historical site during the tour.

  2. Formal: In his speech, the CEO will explain the strategy for the company's growth in the coming year.

  3. Informal: Let me quickly explain how this gadget works.

  4. Real-world: "During the class, the teacher took the time to explain the concept thoroughly to ensure everyone understood."

画像とフレーズで何となくイメージがつかめた気がします。
説明とか教えるみたいな感覚も含んでいるのかなという感じです。一方的に何かをしているというイメージもあるような気がします。

Elaborate

Definition: To add more information to or explain something that you have said.

  1. Standard: The scientist was asked to elaborate on her findings during the presentation.

  2. Formal: The report will elaborate on the key issues faced by the industry.

  3. Informal: Can you elaborate a bit more on what happened last night?

  4. Real-world: "In his lecture, the professor decided to elaborate further on the topic of renewable energy."

Enlighten

Definition: To give someone greater knowledge and understanding about a subject or situation.

  1. Standard: The professor aimed to enlighten his students about the complexities of quantum mechanics.

  2. Formal: The documentary sought to enlighten the public on the impacts of climate change.

  3. Informal: Let me enlighten you about the best spots in the city for a good meal.

  4. Real-world: "Reading good literature has the power to enlighten the mind and broaden one's horizons."

新しく意味や知識をもたらしてあげるという意味があると解釈しました。
画像もすごい光が当たっていて、何か導くように説明するという意味があるのではないでしょうか。
例文を見ると、他動詞ということも分かります。
enlighen ＋「人」で人に影響を与えている感覚があります。

GPTsでは、間違いがあるかもしれませんが、英英辞典の意味だけでは分からないニュアンスを感じ取ることができたように思います。
ニュアンスのみならず、実際の使い方をも知ることができました。
今後も、こういったAIを駆使して英語学習を進めていきたいと思います。
