Widecombe Fair

私達のウディコム村の秋祭りウディコム　フェアーは1850年から続く農業祭です。9月の第2火曜日に毎年行われます。元々は春に生まれた子羊や仔牛などを売買することから始まりダンスや農作物、ジャムにケーキなどの販売や品評会、羊の毛を刈る競争や馬の競技、ドックショー等盛りだくさんです。近年では村の農業祭に収まらず他県から色々なお店が来てテントがずらりと並びます。このお祭りを一度は見たいとたくさんのバスや車が訪れ何千人もの訪問客で賑わいます。

お祭りのシンボルでもあるウディコムフェアーの歌は本当にあったお話を歌にしてあり、この歌はイギリス人なら聞いたことがあるほど有名です。この歌が村のシンボルになっています。　さて　その歌とは。

ウディコムフェアーはこの辺りでは大きな農業祭。踊りにお酒に楽しいことばかり。25キロも離れた村からウディコム村のお祭りに行きたいと村人達が7人ほど集まって相談してます。あまりに遠いので歩いていくのは大変です。当日彼らは馬車を借りますが途中で壊れて動かなくなり、ロバに車を引かせたがロバには重すぎて引けない。とちょうどそこにおじさんトム　ピアーズの白い馬が一頭木下にいるのを見つけ。トム　ピアーに馬を貸してもらうことにしました。トムピアーは土曜日の午後までには馬を返す様にと約束のもとで馬を貸してくれます。ウディコム村まで7人が馬に交代に乗ってやってきました。踊りに楽しい語らいにみんなお酒によて気がつくとトムピアーと約束した土曜日です。これは大変早く帰らなくては、でもみんなお酒出歩けず7人が馬に乗ってそれ歩けやれ歩け冬馬を急き立てるのですが途中で馬は息ついて死んでしまうんです。7人は馬が可哀想で泣いているとそこにトムピアーが帰りの遅い彼らを心配してやってきます。それからというものウディコムフェアーには馬と7人の男達が乗ってパカパカ幽霊として現れるんです。

このお話が歌になって歌われます。またウディコムフェアーの時はアンクル　トムをはじめとして毎年この7人が村から選ばれて仮装して歩いています。

Then Friday came,and Saturday soon, All along,down along,out along lee. But Tom Pearce’s old mare hath not trotted home. Wi’ Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, etc

So Tom Pearce he got up to the top o’the hill, All along, down along, out along lee. And he sees his old mare down a-making her will. Wi’ Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer,etc.

So Tom Pearce’s old mare,her took sick and died All along, down along, out along lee. and Tom he sat down on a stone, and he cried. Wi’ Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer,etc.

But this is not the endo’this shocking affair,. All along, down along,out along lee..Nor,though they be dead, of the horrid career.Of Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, etc.

When the wind whistles cold on the moor of a night,All along, down along,out along lee. Tom Pearce’s old mare doth appear gashed white.Wi’ Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer,etc.

And all the long night be heard skirling and groans, All along, down along, out along lee. From Tom Pearce’s old mare in her rattling bones And from Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer,etc.
