災害ボラ1日目　Disaster Relief Volunteer Day 1

台風19号の被害を受けた福島県いわき市でピースボート災害支援センター(PBV)が活動をしてます。明日(23日)から私はボランティアとして活動に参加します。そのため、今日から現地入りしました。
I’m writing from Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, one of the areas hit hard by Typhoon Hagibis (#19). I’ll be volunteering with Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) for the next week starting tomorrow.

災害支援に携わるのは初めてです。東日本大震災があった時、ボランティアしに行こうという発想はなかった。その後も災害が多く発生したが、ボランティアしに行こうという発想はなかった。今回はなぜ行こうと思ったか。
It’s my first time doing this type of volunteer work. When the Great East Japan Earthquake struck, it didn’t cross my mind to go and take part in the relief efforts. Since 2011, many natural disasters have caused damages in different parts of Japan. But it never crossed my mind to go and volunteer. So why am I here now?

今年に入り、気候変動のことをちゃんと理解し、自分にできることをやろうと決めた。気候変動はもはや気候危機と言う方が正確かもしれない。その影響で自然災害はどんどん増加しています。気候危機がこのままだと、自然災害も今後も増える一方。この実態を自分の目で確認し、同じ想いの仲間と活動をするために今回参加を決意した。
This year I decided I wanted to understand climate change and the implications it has on regular people like myself. It’s probably much more accurate to call it the climate crisis as we are way past the point where changes are simply taking place. One of the most visible effects of the climate crisis are the natural disasters taking place all over the world. If no drastic measures are taken on a global scale to counter the climate crisis, natural disasters will keep increasing. I wanted to see how people’s lives are affected by natural disasters and volunteer alongside people with similar interests.

なので明日からボランティアします。今日は東京から3時間弱かけて福島へ移動。いわき市の泉駅にPBVのスタッフがお迎えに来てくれて、宿泊所に到着。一緒に合流した4名のボランティアとオリエンテーションを受け、台風19号の影響やいわき市の被災状況を聞いた。
That’s why I’m here. Iwaki is about a 3 hour train ride from Tokyo. Upon arriving in Iwaki, PBV staff came to pick me up and took me and the other volunteers joining today to the PBV base. The PBV staff walked me and 4 other volunteers through orientation where we learned about the damages caused by Hagibis and the situation in Iwaki.

その後PBVで活動しているボランティアとスタッフ合計20名と合同のミーティングに参加。今日の活動報告や明日のスケジュール、気づいたことを互いに共有する場となっていた。
After orientation, we took part in the overall meeting which includes all of the staff and volunteers currently working with PBV in Iwaki. Today’s activities, tomorrow’s schedule, as well as thoughts and comments about the day were shared at this meeting.

明日は家屋清掃チームで活動します。全然想像付きません。緊張しますが、やれることは全力でやろうと思います。そして可能な限り、毎日見たものや感じたことを共有しようと思っています。災害ボラに行こうか迷っている人の参考になれたらいいなと思います。
Tomorrow I’ll be part of the team in charge of clearing mud and water damage from homes. As a first time volunteer I’m super nervous about what tomorrow will bring, but I’m also ready to do whatever I can to help. I plan on posting my experience and thoughts each day while I’m here. My hope is that it’ll encourage others debating on whether or not to take action.
