災害ボラ4日目　Disaster Relief Volunteer Day 4

いわき市の中平窪という地域でも台風19号の際にたくさんの家が水害を受けている。 28日に中平窪で「被災家屋の対応説明会」が実施される。今日はその説明会をより多くの人が来てもらえるようビラ配りを行った。
Nakahirakubo, an area in Iwaki City, also experienced flooding when Typhoon Hagibis struck. On the 28th, a briefing about how to deal with water damage to homes will be held. Today I helped distribute leaflets inviting the residents of this area to participate in this session.

浸水した家は一見大丈夫に見えるが、まだ泥が残っていたり、水分を含んでいる状態が続いていることが多いみたいです。しっかり床下を乾燥させ、壁の中の断熱材を交換し、消毒を行う必要がある。これをせずに生活を続けるとカビやシロアリが発生してまった際に健康被害の原因となります。
The homes that were flooded may look fine to the untrained eye, but a lot of them still contain mud and/or water under the floorboards. The area under the floorboards needs to be thoroughly dried, insulation in the walls needs to be exchanged, and these areas need to be disinfected. If this process isn’t completed and people continue to live in water damaged homes, it could lead to health issues as a result of mold and termites.

ビラを配りながら住宅街を歩いた。もう既に別の場所に生活を移していたりリフォームが始まっている家が多かった。外観だけでは分からない被害が広範囲にわたって起きていることを知った。そして先日行った別の地域同様、公園の地面が泥だらけで立ち入り禁止になっていた。
I walked around the community handing out leaflets. It looked like many people had moved out of their homes or had already begun renovating. I learned that it’s hard to tell what kind of damages houses suffered by just looking at the outside. And similar to a different area I visited the other day, most parks have been roped off because they are too muddy to play in.

本日はクリスマス。夕方から避難所に行き、クリスマスパーティーに参加。住民さんは集まってご飯を食べて、プレゼントをもらったり、ビンゴをやった。人生で初めて避難所に行って緊張してたが、住民さんの素敵な笑顔と笑いをたくさん見せていただきました。
Today is Christmas Day. I participated in the Christmas party being held at the temporary shelter in the afternoon. The residents gathered to have dinner together, receive presents, and play bingo. It was my first time visiting a shelter so I was quite nervous going in but the warm smiles and laughter of the residents was contagious.

クリスマスは大切な人や家族と好きなことをして過ごす特別な日。ボランティアしながら、ここでこの日を過ごせたことに感謝。夜遅くまで避難所で働く職員の方や私たちボランティアをまとめてくれているスタッフに感謝。住民さんは来年どんなクリスマスを迎えるんだろう。
Christmas has always been a special day for me. I’m grateful that I had the privilege of spending this day volunteering. I’m grateful for the shelter staff and PBV staff that work long hours. I wonder how the residents of this shelter will spend next Christmas.
