［英詩］Bob Dylan, 'Lay Down Your Weary Tune'

英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月2本目です。歌われる詩の1回めです。今回はボブ・ディランのアルバム 'The Times They Are A-Changin'' (1964)になぜか収められなかった曲 'Lay Down Your Weary Tune' です。1963年10月に録音されました。同じ月、ニューヨークのカーネギーホールで1回だけ歌われています。他に公演記録はありません。ボブ・ディランの曲として公式に発表されたのは1985年の 'Biograph' においてですが、バーズが1965年のアルバム 'Turn! Turn! Turn!' で発表しています(バーズの歌詞は公式に知られている歌詞でなく、ディランが1965年の公演で歌った歌詞です)。

ディランの歌として凄まじい傑作と評価されており、グレイとリクスの詳しい研究があります。そのほかに、マルゴタンやヘイリンによる研究もあります。今回はその4人の研究にもふれます。きちんと論じるには相当なスペースが必要ですが、今回は概観にとどめます。

まとめ

ボブ・ディランの 'Lay Down Your Weary Tune' は正規のスタジオ・アルバムには収録されなかったが、ディランの歌の歴史の中で画期的に重要な作品とされている。その理由は研究者により異なるが、一致しているのは自然界の事象を楽器になぞらえる歌のすばらしさと、社会や政治の歌とは違う認識上の地平についてうたった歌であるということだ。
