Extra Edition 【Sanja Festival】/ Visiting the Seven Fortune Gods of Asakusa

Sanja Festival held every May

”Sanja Matsuri," a festival loved by Asakusa people

I am Tiger (hhu). As a supplementary note, I would like to mention a little about the Sanja Festival.

Before the global pandemic, Sanja-sama was the mikoshi that people carried every year without fail. It was the event that the people of Asakusa looked forward to the most. It is no exaggeration to say that the whole year revolved around this festival!

Lanterns for the town's association

On the Saturday of the May Festival, a procession of mikoshi (portable shrines) is performed by the Ujiko of Asakusa Shrine in 44 towns. About 100 portable shrines, including children's mikoshi, go to Asakusa Shrine for purification. Asakusa children are eagerly waiting for this day to arrive.

The gathering of about 100 portable shrines is a spectacular sight.
To Asakusa Shrine

The sight of the portable shrines and their bearers gathered behind Sensoji Temple is nothing short of magnificent.

Yo, shashashan, shashashan, shashashan, shashashan!.

The participants clap their hands and raise the portable shrines to the sky with a lively call and the sound of clapping wood. Finally, the mikoshi is carried to Asakusa Shrine. The early summer comes, when Asakusa is at its most glorious.

On Sunday, the head office mikoshi of Sanja-sama is on duty

Ichinomiya departs

Early Sunday morning begins with the unveiling of the head mikoshi. Three portable shrines, Ichinomiya, Ninomiya, and Sanomiya, parade through the town in turn every year, carrying and passing the portable shrines from town to town. Immediately after the mikoshi is passed from one town to another, some of the people become very eager to be the first to receive it, so be careful. The tigers restrain their impetuousness and wait with ease.

Late in the evening, the miya-irisari ceremony is held. Basically, the youth club of the town council on duty that year takes the lead in the miyairi. This is the moment when I wish that the festival would continue forever, as I chew the joy of carrying the mikoshi in this lively atmosphere with all my strength. However, the main mikoshi is heavy. Two tons cannot be carried forever. The mikoshi is delivered into the warehouse through the lanterns that twinkle in the night sky.

How was it? I would be happy if I could convey the joy of the Sanja Matsuri even a little. In 2022, the Sanja Matsuri will be held at a reduced scale even after the ban on the spread of the festival has been lifted, and only the parade out and parade in will be held quietly by selected Ujiko. I am looking forward to the day when Asakusa children will be able to walk the portable shrines in the streets of Asakusa with their hearts beating loudly in the streets of Asakusa. As I look at past photos and write articles in "Mahhu Note", I strongly hope that the day will come soon.
