5 weeks stay in Singapore

From March 17, 2024 to April 20, 2024, I stayed in Singapore to visit Nanyang Technological University (NTU). This was my first time visiting other research groups. Therefore, at first, I was a bit nervous but thanks to everyone's kindness, I had a very enjoyable time and had fruitful discussions.

Nostalgic Singapore

Actually, this was not my first time visiting Singapore. In December 2022, I attended a workshop "Quantum resources from mathematical foundations to operational characterisation" whose venue was Clarke Quay, which is close to Chinatown where I stayed. So during my stay this time, I often walked around this area and felt nostalgic.

Through my participation in this resource theory workshop, thankfully, I was able to make many new friends in Singapore. I was really looking forward to meeting them, and I was also excited to meet new people in Singapore.

Nanyang Technological University

Nanyang Technological University (NTU), where I visited, is located in the west of Singapore. Take a bus from Pioneer MRT Station (or Boon Lay MRT Station) to the university.

Being pioneering is important for us, researchers.

I visited in.Q group. The cheerfulness of this group is evident in this photo.

I would like to thank Prof. Nelly Ng Huei Ying and Mr. Jeongrak Son for their hospitality. I would also like to thank everyone for having many discussions and conversations, for having lunch and dinner, and for going out with me.

NTU's campus was very comfortable for me. It was rich in nature and the foods at the school canteens were delicious.

The Hive

Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR)

Get off at One North MRT station, which is like an office block. I gave an introduction of two of our results at a seminar at A*STAR's Quantum Innovation Centre (Q.InC): https://www.a-star.edu.sg/qinc/events/qinc-seminar-by-shintaro-minagawa . I would like to thank Dr. Yunlong Xiao for inviting me and having a lot of interesting discussions.

The Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT)

Get off at Kent Ridge MRT Station and walk a short distance to CQT. It is remarkable that an entire building consists of groups doing quantum. I visited two groups and talked with my friends. I would like to thank a member of Prof. Marco Tomamichel's group for having a lot of time for discussion. Interesting discussions with members of Prof. Valerio Scarani's group are gratefully acknowledged. Also, thank you very much to my friends who spoke with me.

Animals

I love animals. When I go abroad, it is always a lot of fun to see animals that are not in Japan. Here I would like to mention monkeys, lizards, and birds I met in Singapore.

About 30 days Chinatown was interesting

I stayed in Chinatown for about 30 days. Without exaggeration, it is one of my favorite towns. When you get off the Chinatown MRT station, it is always crowded with tourists. I think most people only stay here for a few days at most. After 30 days, I was no longer a tourist.

Delicious food

Basically, I went to Chinatown Complex, People's Park Complex, and Maxwell Food Centre to eat my favorite, Hainanese chicken rice (海南鸡饭) and Laksa (叻沙). You can eat most things for 4 to 8 SGD (reasonable price!). I also went to Little India to make my dream of eating biryani come true.

There are a lot of Japanese chains, for example, Hoshino Coffee (星乃珈琲店), SAIZERIYA (サイゼリヤ), MOS BURGER (モスバーガー).

Hair cut

In Singapore, there is a Japanese barber shop chain called QB House.

As for financial support

Nagoya University provides financial support for studying abroad at partner universities to cultivate PhD skills (博士課程推進機構海外研修を通した大学院生の研究能力とPhDスキル強化プログラム(JASSO海外留学支援制度(協定派遣))). I would like to thank this program for its support.
