Book Review: ‘Writing That Works’ by Kenneth Roman and Joel Raphaelson

After reading 'Do You Talk Funny?' by David Nihill, I've been looking for a book about business writing. Speaking improvement was over, and now is the time to face writing skills.

In today's modern workplaces, chat tools have become the go-to way to communicate, eclipsing even face-to-face interactions. It's not too much to say that writing is more crucial than speaking, especially for us IT workers. So why not enhance your writing skills?

This book shows you how to write clear and concise emails, reports, and presentations like a pro.

Writing That Works

Come Right Out And Say It

Instead of this…
It is generally desirable to communicate your thoughts in a forthright manner. Toning your point down and tiptoeing around it may, in many circumstances, tempt the reader to tune out and allow his mind to wander.

… say this.
Don't mumble.

p.8

Cut the fluff and get straight to the point. Keep everything short, direct, and easy to understand. Write the way you talk. What you write should sound just like you talking. This is all that the authors are trying to say throughout the book.

However, it's also essential to retain the necessary sentences to avoid coming across as rude. The key is finding a balance between too windy and too abrupt.

My Impression

Good. 4 out of 5.

Unlike other writing guides, this book offers a variety of examples and compares bad and good versions so you can understand the actual problem in your writing.

Personally, the chapter on teaching how to write emails was especially helpful. I tend to use redundant introductory remarks and sometimes forget to end with a call to action. We just need the essential information to prompt action and decision-making.

There is no need for the written equivalent of small talk

p.72

On the other hand, the chapter on using computers might need further revision, considering the convenience and accuracy of AI-powered tools such as Grammarly, Chat GPT, and Gemini. They might already be working on the fourth edition.

Conclusion: If you lack confidence in your business writing skills, this book is for you. Grab your copy and become a cut above the rest.
