Today's kanji is "Go(五)." So, let's start by explaining a little more about the word.

Go means number five. There is another Kanji called go(語) that includes go(五). Go(語) is the second kanji of the idiom “gengo(言語)”. It means language in English.

Before I draw these kanji, I will first prepare a kanji box. Imagine that your kanji are inside an invisible square box. This box will stop you drawing your kanji too big or too small.

Let’s move on to writing the kanji for go(五). Go(五) is drawn using 4 lines.

Line 1: First, we draw a horizontal line at the top.
Line 2: Then we draw a vertical slanting line from the middle of line 1 to the bottom of the kanji ‘box’.
Line 3: Halfway down the kanji, we draw a short horizontal line that crosses line 2, and then goes down. Line 3 should look like half a square and stops at the bottom of the Kanji ‘box’.
Line 4: Finally we draw a long horizontal line that connects lines 2 and 3.

“Go(五)” is complete!!

If you practice writing kanji without a kanji box, I recommend using squared paper. Like this!!

A lot of Japanese people aren't good at writing kanji beautifully, so don’t worry if your handwriting is messy.
