How to write kanji Machi (町)

Today's kanji is machi(町). So, let's start by explaining a little more about the word.

Machi(町) includes a basic kanji called ta(田). Ta(田) is also called den(田). Ta(田) means a field for growing rice. If you can write ta(田), it will help to write other kanji such as ”otoko(男)”,”hatake(畑)",”shi(思)”,”yu(勇)”, and so on.

But today, let’s only explain 2 kanji “ta(田)” and “machi(町)”. Machi (町) means town and city.

Before I draw these kanji, I will first prepare two kanji boxes. Imagine that your kanji are inside an invisible square box. This box will stop you drawing your kanji too big or too small.

First, let’s move on to writing the kanji for ta(田). This kanji is drawn using ５ lines.

Line 1 : We begin by drawing a vertical line.
Line 2 : From the top of line 1, we draw half a square left and then down.
Line 3 : Next we draw a vertical line down from the top of the kanji.
Line 4 : We then make a cross by drawing a horizontal line that crosses the middle of line 3.
Line 5 : Finally, we complete the box by drawing a horizontal line that connects lines 1 and 2.

Ta(田) is complete!!

Second, let’s move on to writing the kanji for machi(町). This kanji is drawn using 7 lines.

Line 1 : We begin by drawing a vertical line.
Line 2 : From the top of line 1, we draw half a square left and then down.
Line 3 : Next we draw a vertical line down from the top of the kanji.
Line 4 : We then make a cross by drawing a horizontal line that crosses the middle of line 3.
Line 5 : Finally, we complete the box by drawing a horizontal line that connects lines 1 and 2.
Line 6 : Next, on the right side we draw a short horizontal line that is a little further down from the top
of the “ta(田)” kanji..
Line 7 : From the middle of line 6, draw a vertical line. The end of this line needs to bend a little to the left.

Machi(町) is complete!!

And, If you practice writing kanji without a kanji box, I recommend using squared paper. Like this!! A lot of Japanese people aren’t good at writing kanji beautifully, so don’t worry if your handwriting is messy.
