Hello. Today, I am at Murin-an in Kyoto. As a self-proclaimed Japanese garden girl, I will do my best to introduce the highlights of this garden as an amateur reporter.

こんにちは。今日は、京都の無鄰菴に来ました。日本庭園好きの自称庭女子の私が、素人なりにこの庭の鑑賞ポイントをお話させて頂きます。

Murin-an is the private residence under Japan’s leading statesmen Aritomo Yamagata 　(1838-1922), during the Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho period (1912-1926). The garden of this private residence was built to realize the wishes of Aritomo Yamagata by a master gardener named Jihei Ogawa VII.

無鄰菴は、明治・大正時代の政治家・山縣有朋のもと別荘です。この別荘の庭は、山縣有朋の思いを小川治兵衛という作庭家によって実現したお庭となっています。

Here, you can hear the relaxing sound of flowing water. A stream runs through the center of the 3,300 square meter property. This is an artificial stream. In Kyoto, a canal flowing from Lake Biwa was completed in the Meiji period, and that canal also brings water from Lake Biwa to this garden. The beautiful tones are created by a step called seochi in the stream and the arrangement of a lot of small stones called mizuwake-ishi in the stream.

水の流れるいい音がしています。約1000坪の敷地の中心には小川が流れています。もちろん人工の小川です。京都では明治時代に琵琶湖疏水が完成したため、この水も琵琶湖から流れてくる水となっています。この美しい音色は、小川の中に瀬落ちという段差を造っていることと、小さな水分石を小川の中にたくさん配置することにより奏でられているそうです。

This garden is built against the backdrop of Mt. Higashiyama, and the back of the garden is composed of the same dark green as the mountain. As it approaches the main residence, the scenery gradually shifts to light green. This gradation in the scenery is not possible unless Mt. Higashiyama is positioned as the main character, so the gardener must take care while adjusting the trees so that Mt. Higashiyama can be seen properly from the main residence.

このお庭は東山を借景に造られていて、庭の奥は山と同じ濃い緑で構成されています。それが母屋に近づくにつれ、だんだんと薄い緑になってきます。このグラデーションの光景は、東山が主役でないと成立しないため、母屋から東山がちゃんと見えるように、庭師さんが木々を調整しながら剪定されているそうです。

When you walk on the pavement, you will notice that there is a small mound of gravel. It is necessary to walk slowly in order to avoid breaking this pile of gravel. Perhaps it is a clever device made to relax our steps and cause us to take a leisurely walk.

舗装を歩いていると気付くのは、砂利がうっすら盛られていることです。この盛られた砂利を崩さずに歩くにはゆっくり歩くことが必要です。もしかしたら、私たちの歩を意図的に緩めさせ、ゆっくり散策してもらおうという、にくい工夫なのかもしれません。

Well-maintained moss is spread like a carpet. In the past, a grass lawn was planted at the request of Yamagata, but now it has turned into moss.

よく手入れされた苔が絨毯のように広がっています。昔は、山縣有朋の希望で芝が引かれていたそうですが、今は苔に生え変わっています。

Because the trees are treated so that you don't even notice they are pruned, the garden is filled with a sense of natural beauty.

木々も剪定しているとは気付かないような自然な整え方がされていて、自然の美しさを感じます。

Murin-an's garden does not follow the traditional Japanese garden style, but is designed to follow Yamagata's wishes. Yamagata was born in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and in his youth he was surrounded by such a gentle landscape, he must have tried to recreate it through his garden. How wonderful a garden architect Jihei Ogawa must have been to actually manifest Yamagata's wishes! Through the creation of this garden, Jihei Ogawa achieved recognition as a first-class garden designer. Don’t you think so too?

無隣庵のお庭は、伝統的な日本庭園の様式を踏襲せずに、本当に山縣有朋の思いに沿うように作り上げられています。山縣有朋の出身地は山口県の萩で、子供の頃このような優しい風景を見ていたから、きっとそれを庭として実現しようとしたのではないでしょうか。その思いを実際に庭に実現した小川治兵衛の素晴らしさ！小川治兵衛は、この庭を作ることで、一流の作庭家として認められるに至っています。納得ですね。

Finally ... Look at this cute stone! It is tied in a cross with a rope called shuro-nawa, which is often seen in gardens in Kyoto. This used to symbolize a spiritual barrier, but now it just means “off limits”.

最後に・・・このシュロ縄で十字に縛ったかわいい石は、京都の庭園ではよく見かけるものです。これは、昔は結界を意味したそうですが、今は立ち入り禁止を意味しています。

Also, the circular stones embedded in the ground are placed to mark viewing spots, so be sure to stand on them and notice the views that they offer. What scenery will you see?

また、こちらの丸い石は視点場を意味します。ここからの景色は格別だよという意味です。ぜひ立ってみて下さい。どのような景色が見えるでしょうか。
