How to ask for a freight indication? Important infomation to prepare when asking a chemical tanker owner for freight rate

Chemical tanker owners typically receive inquiries through email. Among hundreds of emails owner receive daily, owner select cargoes that match the position of each vessel.

Including details such as the Cargo detail (product and volume), loading port, discharging port, laycan, and laytime makes it easier to provide an indication.

Below is an example.

Good day,
Please offer for -
19,000 mt Sulphuric acid Acid 5% moloo
Load: Fangcheng
Discharge: Vizag or Kakinada
Laycan: 7 days 2H June / 1H July
Laytime: 300/450 mpth

Some owners do not fix their trade lanes and choose cargoes based on demand, while others prefer to stay in a specific region and opt to secure Contracts of Affreightment (COA). The commercial strategy varies for each owner.

For example, in our short sea trade within Southeast Asia, we are almost always able to find space unless it is 2-3 weeks prior because we strategically station our fleet in the region. Under such circumstances, we can propose regular sailing freight ideas.

In contrast, our deep sea trade does not operate in a regular area, so the availability of space for loading must be checked each time. Additionally, since freight rates fluctuate with market conditions, it is difficult for us to propose a rate idea unless we have a fixed laycan from charterer.
